1. O my eye, be generous in shedding tears for the loss of the sea with rain,
Pour down tears and leave neither a trace nor a drop,

2. If the flow of a teardrop could bring back one that passed,
Sparks and embers would have streamed from my eyes like a river,

3. Watering the earth. So when will the blamer cease blaming if I say little?
Leave it flowing naturally like rain from the sky above,

4. O questioner loudly, about what I endure,
Your coming to know my state will not reveal my secret,

5. None but my sighs on the hilltops know of me,
And I see my tears streaming down no other than the descender,

6. I spend my days in anxiety and sorrow,
And the length of my nights in contemplation and vigil,

7. And my heart is plunged into an ocean of worries.
Do you not see my falling tears like pearls from it?

8. So may God's mercy and good pleasure encompass him,
Greetings of peace to one who wept over a life,

9. The ocean of knowledge that turbid views never muddied
When complex issues were posed and when clear,

10. And how much ink has blackened pages that it guarded
Until conformity was reached between ink and ink,

11. I do not forget what students throng around,
Like planets orbiting the moon,

12. Dividing knowledge between novice and beginner
Like the division of rain between plants and trees,

13. And no special person was distinguished with a trait,
Rather its grace covered mankind universally,

14. Indeed it erected the beacon of religion radiantly
Lighting the universe for mankind,

15. In the first century and last, it truly revived
Civilization and faith for us after decline,

16. In name, knowledge, and piety they converged
Though separated in era and age,

17. But the lamp of religion shone singularly
While the other is shared with seven flowers,

18. Who has virtues or merits or issues that he brings effortlessly
With no frustration, who has benefits or customs or rules he builds seamlessly

19. With no defect, who has fatwas and solving intricacies when
Discourse is profound and people are lost in thought,

20. When differences occur between blind people, and the judgment therein is not straightforward,
They said: “When knotty problems arise, notify Umar,

21. And if he sleeps, then whoever comes after will handle the complex matter.”
If ibn Idris the Imam saw him, he would acknowledge

22. Or delight his eye with the sight,
He was excellent to the Ummah when he disciplined it

23. With the discipline of one victorious for truth and considerate,
You see wonders in his deduction that amaze,

24. Reason would reject if not for the witness of eyes that have seen,
His envious ones said when they saw the gems

25. Of his research which matured knowledge built upon knowledge:
“God is Greater! This is nothing but an angel!

26. Far be it from God that this be from mankind!”
In my experience, the greatest among them in his presence

27. Is like a fledgling near a falcon from its youth,
A hadith scholar, say to those who had agreed

28. To listen to him, but fled from him in fright,
You were haughty but humbled yourselves in confidence

29. When a group humbled themselves before mere claims,
A hadith scholar, through opening he has much aid

30. Realizing the hope of God’s Prophet in his life,
He related gatherings of al-Junayd containing words

31. That admonish people and alert the contemplative,
His door where pilgrims come he welcomes

32. With ease, nobility, and familiarity,
If he said these wooden bracelets were gold

33. Evidences would arise shining like pearls,
And if he spoke one day in a debate

34. His meaning would surpass the mind’s grasp,
Ask Ibn Adlan about his verification, and Abu

35. Hayyan, and be fair when you judge and analyze,
One whose opinion is sound, a disputant of opponents, he went

36. In his quest the best disputant and pilgrim,
How many proofs and military expeditions he appointed,

37. And how much his blessed life contained of ages,
He deafened ears and bound minds

38. And freed eyelids for one broken,
He strove to reach us on the day of standing, but

39. The caravan did not respond save with fragrant praise,
They eulogized him on the day of introducing the pilgrims, so

40. They clamored and fretted in sorrow for the strange affliction,
O you who has Paradise for an abode, it became your dwelling,

41. Sleep comfortably, for my heart burns for you,
Your Lord has gifted you with bounty and seeing Him,

42. An increase in His pleasure with you, so pride yourself,
He removed from you life’s burdens, so you need not

43. Recite but the end of creation if you wish,
You have made desolate pages of knowledge you compiled

44. And a populated home from your household,
None has possessed for extravagance or singing

45. A verse of poetry or a strand of verse,
Rather you busied yourself with deducing an issue

46. Or solving a predicament that exhausted thought,
Victoriously you stood up for a text we cite as evidence,

47. Like a sword indicating effect by trace,
You folded for us the carpet of knowledge, mounted

48. Upon certainty’s seat before the Mighty,
Kanana is for you a refuge, attributed

49. To Dar Misr, though the home was in Mudhar,
The bowing of its arch protects, along with arrows of prayer,

50. Its courtyards through you from every sinner and betrayer,
How many arrows in Kanana missed their mark

51. When you were distant, and from a bow with no string,
Sixty-two years you remained singular

52. In the rank of knowledge within, what a celebrated one,
You never ceased being glorious to the eminent, vigilant

53. And did not end up at a cup or stringed instrument,
Indeed you protected Islam’s sanctuary, diligent

54. Until the excellent took from it necklaces of pearls,
You scattered the gathered enemies of religion where they

55. Inclined between feminization and broken plurals,
You stabbed the recalcitrant in their speech

56. With grammar, without stabbing with needles,
At times with the sword of guidance among atheists lunging,

57. And times with arrows of remembrance into Tatars,
A great loss the heretics rejoiced at

58. Like the pantheists, Shiites, and fatalists,
Would that the nights had kept one in whom

59. Were gathered the guidance of the beneficial and harmful,
Would that in taking Umar’s life it took the lives

60. Of his students, especially the one his life resembled,
Alas! If ransom before death was offered

61. The Shaykh’s would have been, without doubt, people’s souls,
My wonder at a grave containing him, indeed it is wondrous

62. When it shows the expansiveness of his heart for the sea,
My craving for the loss of the Muslims’ Shaykh, indeed

63. The affliction is grave, though I am stoically patient,
My craving for him, a lamp that was lit

64. Rising brilliantly with an unextinguished wick,
If not for his light we would have feared the fire of his intellect

65. But he extinguished it, putter-outer of embers,
The Nile, lantern of the lamp, was set ablaze

66. When he passed away, so they were amazed at the river’s perception,
My craving! Does composing an elegy benefit me?

67. How can the little of heart substitute for poverty?
My craving for him, for a night he would spend

68. In extra prayer, remembrance, and Quran until dawn,
My craving for him, for knowledge he would compile

69. Though the night vigil would be difficult for him,
My craving for him, for how he benefited

70. Through deeds and words, that cannot be enumerated,
My craving for him, for harm he would ward off

71. From people, nomads and settled, alike,
Yes, and how long my sorrow will last for

72. Abdul Rahim, as my sorrow has no limit,
My craving for the era’s hadith preserver, renowned

73. Whose landmarks spread like the sun at zenith,
Hadith science collapsed when he passed away and went

74. And the ages mourn after the eye the trace,
My craving for the loss of my two sheikhs who

75. Are most precious to me than my hearing and sight,
My craving for them, speaking of their perfection

76. Revives the withered and distracts the lively from evening conversation,
Two eagles never reached the height they reached

77. An eagle of the sky, if determined, or the land, if soaring,
One resembled the pride of Ghifar in dialect truthful

78. And the other, Juhanah, if you asked about news,
I never cease to wonder at the concord in their lives

79. A year like a year until a month like a month,
They lived eighty years, then a year

80. And a quarter year, minus the slightest difference,
Religion pursued worldly gain through them

81. A blessing that never weakened for mankind,
With the sun, lantern of religion, and the full moon,

82. Adorner of religion, followed in its trace,
My shining suns darkened in my eyes when they set

83. My illuminating moons erased from me,
Indeed I have tasted separation's torment among loved ones and they

84. Saw comfort, so they went the way of the bold,
O heart, they went and you did not accompany

85. Ascending to the companion at the gardens and river,
And you lived after their passing, showing endurance

86. Suffering longing, how stony you are,
And you, O eye, look not but for them

87. What are you to me if you look with sight?
Let no person from other than them fool you

88. Even if he illuminates, what is light without fruit?
Say to my gloomy living after its radiance:

89. O end of purity, this is the start of turbidity,
What comes after them is no aim, O death, you seek

90. You have reached the horizon ascended, so do not fly,
The abodes of those completed are empty of them

91. So the heart has despair and the eye has vigil,
Branches of a garden their faces withered in the soil

92. Leaving it lonely due to that blossoming spectacle,
My tears for them and my poetry in eulogizing them

93. Are like pearls between rhythmic and scattered,
The cups of demise circulated when I was absent from

94. Beloved ones of my heart, if only the cup had not circulated,
I was keen to meet up with them but missing them passed

95. So I have spurned my homeland if it eludes me,
But hope to meet the Judge of judges has urged

96. Me to the religion, inciting me to travel,
The heir of his father, he had specified his

97. Appointment as successor, so wait, O excellent awaited one,
A youth in years, in magnitude the likeness of his

98. Father, concordant legal age and elder,
Emulating his father in manner and ethics, equal him

99. The full moon in dusk is like the full moon at dawn,
He has virtues extending wherever the moon has extended

100. And a conduct a most just has walked,
Knowledge, forbearance, encompassing justice, piety,

101. Chastity, bestowal, endless,
Noble traits in eminence, when they transcended and ruled

102. They appeared and shone for us like flowers and blossoms,
O perfect of origin, close of link, abundant of

103. Unconstrained generosity, not constrained,
O master in meanings, long has been his quest

104. You have seized them by force with truth, so be content,
If you are distinguished in jurisprudence, you surpassed the ancients in intellect

105. And attained correctness, stalwart and wary,
If you speak on fundamentals, then listen and

106. Speak and do not boast, what pride is ar-Razi with?
If you interpret, you verify every ambiguity

107. So your mental sword is transparent upon at-Tabari,
Sibawayh does not raise his head if you

108. Decline grammar with an eye not downcast,
And since olden times in hadith you have indeed

109. Ascended in memorization and mastery to the peak,
My master, patience, for you know we

110. In our misery have the example in the master of mankind,
Excuse your loving one for the delay in condolences

111. For an estrangement I have remained in, what justification can I offer?
Do not say to me, in gentleness rather than reproach:

112. “You prolonged your stay during your journey upon me.”
After a year, converse with us in an elegy,

113. Why not, and we are still in the tenth of the tenth,
By the right of your love, if not for nearness to you I would not

114. Have returned my thoughts or verified with my sight,
With what mind shall I say poetry? I had

115. Sorrow suppressing intellect and thought,
Thought and sorrow within my heart at wilderness dwelled

116. And an estrangement I remained in, utterly broken,
Moreover, grief for the Shaykh has with me no

117. Ending until my life ends,
I missed invoking for him during my journey when I missed

118. So the missing inspired what I encountered in my travels,
Clouds of good pleasure remain upon his grave forever

119. As the leaves rustled through the myrtles and paper,
I believed his grave to be a garden, so my

120. Eyes understood it as a water-spring,
Stay for us as you are, neither the crescent nor

121. The diademed singer in brilliant gold,
And may your door remain frequented by four:

122. Honor, victory, prosperity, and success,
