1. The day you reached youth was no ordinary day
For he who suffers your aloofness is slain

2. O gazelle who ignored my pact and grew distant
So enjoy this day where the heart is your pasture

3. I came to a house but heard not your singing within
In both cases, maidens, your singing obsesses me

4. I remain in union and separation, ever yearning
I fear or hope for you whether near or far

5. I hide an illness, though my face conceals it
Grief and beauty both hide me and you

6. You don’t recall the day of union when
I kissed your cheek, past and future

7. You turned from me, capturing my heart, so what
Vengeance in your rage, capturing and imprisoning you

8. She said, “In my travel I sought, but you”

9. Noble origin, though you left this longing one
Never attribute stinginess, never to your name

10. Let not my eyes or illness find peace
Perhaps through this illness, my body will subdue you

12. Those blaming you, may God cure you of sickness
And turn from you ignorance and protect you

13. Leave blame, and bring a cup, in you is
In this talk, may God shepherd or awaken you

14. How sweet the breeze, freshened by your mouth
How beautiful, meeting you at dawn and at night

15. You left me, your heart once my home
Why not join my body, my complaining heart?

16. Since I saw your abode, my patience failed me
Save for my weeping eyes, nothing was loyal

17. The distance between my soul and its comfort
Is the distance between my eyelids and seeing you

18. The sea told us the tale of its obtainer
But the narrator, not the tale, deserves praise

19. Its lines and meanings, so organized
As if pearls between threads interlaced and aligned

20. From you my soul emerged, O remarkable wit
Quenched by life from your wellspring of life

21. May your life nourish and greet you, honored one
How vulgar the envious, mean-spirited belittling you

22. You attained what eluded us, excelling in wisdom
By God, how did you enlighten both states?

23. My thoughts, he dictates your description, so if
You praise, reward with wealth and property

24. If a fire of brilliance is kindled in you
Through praising him, paradise will be your abode

25. He nourishes your generosity, and you his praise
So in both cases, his grace is your water-bearer

26. O you who liken his generosity to rain
Who compares the smiling one to the weeping?
