1. Her glances stood me in grief and sorrow,
The glances of that gentle, graceful gazelle.

2. Whenever my distraction turned toward her,
The glances of her eyes struck me with piercing arrows.

3. Languorous, deadly, charming,
Her arrows fatal in hearts.

4. Is there any remedy for one sick with love,
Any cure for one whose sickness lingers?

5. Oh you, the blamer, the reproacher, until
I felt the sins were all my sins.

6. Be as you wish, in union or separation,
My heart feels only sorrow toward you.

7. Yours are the body of passion, the mouth of smiles,
The breeze of Zephyr, the statute of the young lover.

8. You have denied passion, but the passion's
Complexion and the glance of the deceiver confessed it.

9. In my state, whether joined or sundered,
I suffer torment from the pains of love―

10. Between nearness soured by barriers
And union soured by spies.

11. Oh my companion, leave me with my tears
For in tears is relief for the anguished.

12. What can you tell about a lover's struggle
Who has stopped his heart for his beloved?

13. Is there any at peace to greet
That excellent, gentle, well-bred youth?

14. The cousin of my uncle though of my line
Is no true kin when ruin appears.

15. Loyal in affection, true to his word, my friend
Faithful in my presence, faithful in my absence,

16. Each day he brings me gardens
Watered by the outpouring of his thoughts.

17. They come with every fellowship and kindness,
Arriving with all beauty and bounty―

18. Oh son of Nasr, you have guarded against the misery of nights
And turns of fate and bows of misfortune.

19. My patience became clear when it saw
My separation from the beloved gazelle.
