1. Your standing in the abodes is a disgrace upon you
And youthfulness has been returned, borrowed

2. After forty celestial cycles
Persisting in foolishness and deception

3. I stripped away my youth except for remnants
That old age provokes into white hair

4. The singing girls said, ask the young man
How can it be when puberty has turned white?

5. I do not forget the visit here, though weak
And our appointment is Ma’an and bewilderment

6. The night grew long with me and the nights
Of fate I enjoyed its short nights

7. I loved in them the bashful nights
The horses deserved the honorable race

8. And the quick wine to my meeting
Hurried and my cups were large

9. And how many a night I did not gain from it
I longed for it and recalling it kept me awake

10. Repaying the debt of its delays has finished me
And so the ardently desiring heart came to me

11. I stay up drinking deeply from goblets
That intoxicate but have no wine-bearer

12. Until the night's garment softened around us
And it said, arise, for the bracelets have cooled

13. It steals glances furtively toward me
Turning away as the ostrich fled

14. That morning drew near and I know not
Whether it brought desire or harm

15. I have become hostile to the light of dawn until
My eyelids from its rise are bleary

16. And the displeased finds fault in me
He will meet it when settled and land

17. And I reckon he will wage a war
Against a people whose sins are small

18. As Numayr was humiliated by his shepherd
And he dragged against the sons of Asad calamity

19. And how many a day I reached at the dawn of night
As if the riders beneath them were carpets

20. When darkness receded, kin stretched out
As if it were pearls and they were the sea

21. It waves upon the gazes so it is water
And it flames with passions so it is fire

22. When glory resides in a place
I yearn for it even if distant is the tomb

23. My staying is little where I do not love
And my sleep is with those I love the least

24. My resolve refused me, and my sword's edge
And my determination, and the flat lands and ruins

25. And a soul that does not neighbor disgrace
And honor that no shame pollutes

26. And a people like those who accompanied the generous
And steeds like those the best rode

27. And how many a land we scattered in it
At dawn, and its plumes of dust rose high

28. And horses whose flanks were nimble so when
We were named among them, fleeing was forgotten

29. And how many a king we seized rule from him
And tyrant whose blood violent was spilled

30. And when they were tempted by an abode
They returned while its dwellings were spoils

31. So they have become while the world entirely
For us is a house and neighbor contained

32. When the Nizar are our servants by night
Then all people are Nizar
