1. Her first glance pierced my inner being
And wrestled the remnants of life within my body

2. I feigned sleeping though watchful
In my ruin she succeeded, the diligent one

3. She was unkind though her glance did not inflict
No blame on the necklace if it adorns yet finds no merit

4. I complain to God about her eyes and what they have done
And to the branches for what comes to them gently swaying

5. That I complain to the branch for her deeds, I have
Complained of a tender branch though myself tenderer

6. In complaining I extol her charms
Nor muffled in blankets do I pass the nights

7. Aflame is my heart, what can extinguish its blaze
Except the coolness of rain and lips like hail

8. Radiant are the two eyes amid her cheeks
Pink blossoms, but picked by none but my dreams

9. She has broken promise after promise
Many morrows she lied in and many more yet to come
