1. Death tires of the death of the drunkard
Rather, death is enamored of the noble

2. The pigeons bypass the ranks of flies
Stumbling, it distracts them with the scent of mouths

3. Speech bows, resentful of a mean person
Of the sublime, elegant, graceful one

4. A wanderer wandering, not staying in a place
Speaking without measuring or weighing

5. After this, what do we have left but a handful
If a handful of hands were enough for the deceased

6. Do not burden my heart with carrying sorrow
It is not within my capacity or duty

7. You were my friend and companion and confidante
And my intimate friend of youth and ally

8. Is it spring when my spring has departed
Or my summer when my summer migrated?

9. O you who hastens glory impatiently
To the death that rejects high status

10. You have reached the lofty glory
And left behind lowly status

11. Departing the house for the desolation of a quarter
Seeking the familiarity of a known enclosure

12. You did not hurry away from me except
You chose sheep that hurry the shepherd

13. You did not complete the term of your years before
Disappearing like a full moon at its apex

14. Who eclipsed the moon and bent
Then by force eclipsed the sun

15. A term that cannot be reversed by a legion of thoughts
Not even for Avicenna and a thousand wise opinions

16. Letters whose pronunciation perplexes the simple
I do not see a reader for those letters

17. The pigeons do not ward off the striking of swords
Or straight polearms or swords

18. Or coats of mail forged for David
Or fortified citadels or caves

19. If a man protected himself with fortresses
The lion of lions would protect itself with its claw

20. It fells the heavily armored horseman
Complaining of weapons amidst the ranks

21. And deaths wandering awake
At a bivouac like a haunting specter

22. Seething with the quintessence of a cup
Of lethal poison, stored
