1. I sent you messages with my sighs
And with my tears an abundant spring imploring

2. Oh beloveds, indeed the tears that flowed
Were messengers between us and missives

3. By the life of my desire, the knocking of passion didn’t know
That it had rubbed my sides and shoulders raw

4. One evening I bade farewell to my cheeks and tresses
Gliding over the staff, my knots undone

5. As if an untamed gazelle had escaped me
Yearning, bidding farewell to the flirting gazelle

6. And the sly glance stole me, son of a flirt
Grazing negligently amidst the meadow

7. And death brought me its fearful, horrifying decrees
With a procession of favors that filled the anklets

8. While I had given my obedience to the maidens
And became bewildered until I loved the maidens

9. My friends, the heart cannot be safe
For you I have no tranquility until I reach ruin

10. Oh, nothing rivals the open space where the breeze blows
Watering its land and the thickets

11. The clouds watered it copiously before dawn
Quenching its blossoms and branches

12. The youthful breeze sported playfully
With its meadows filled with kith and kin

13. I stopped and the abodes wept for me, their loved ones
Though I did not use to weep for the abodes, their halting places

14. The dwellings between the two mosques are as though
I have a right to them that I've apportioned to you

15. Bestow upon me a heart that does not settle down
Whenever turmoil incites it to blaze

16. Worry rekindled its embers
Making my ribs burst into flames

17. And longing for you ignited me anew
With nightingales of sorrows singing their laments

18. So from a sigh in my chest dancing frantically
And from a teardrop on my cheek shedding its showers

19. I did not know, when the north wind blew your memory
Whether I sipped something wholesome or poison

20. I remembered you like remembering the vanished encampments
Thirstily, and no spring quenched my thirst but you

21. But it is a soul that fell for you, so it beautified
The ends of my days over the beginnings

22. Still no soul, even if I poured it
Into your attributes in verse, do I consider it enough

23. I try to portray it in poetry but poetry falls short
I say perhaps poetry will yield some benefit

24. Cast another look, revive the stranger, for I
Have fallen for your lethal eyes

25. And spur on the crossing of the two valleys
Like the firm pillars of the overhanging cliff

26. For there is a haven for the guide I knew
By his plain, where the angels threw pebbles

27. Cling to him and cling to the door with a persistent kiss
Chains that unleashed many chained hands

28. And look upon the illuminated tomb
Where you look with light for your eye, even when bleary

29. And remain in the eye of God while the eye is a joy
Drawing near to Him sincerely and repelling falsehood
