1. The days have turned against me like warriors,
And which brave warrior withstands spears?

2. Do you know which lofty ships the seas wrecked?
And which palm was plucked and its dates scattered?

3. Will not time reclaim what it gave?
Twisting its threats and keeping its vows?

4. Time is to be feared for its arrows.
And if it's said it shot arrows deliberately,

5. Then it only struck and my kinsmen were hit,
And it only folded what it spread and initiated,

6. And it only turned victoriously,
Governing victory and excelling.

7. We are but like shepherds' sheep,
Death frightens us, dispersing and expelling.

8. And death is but like the setting of swords -
It only disappeared to sheathe itself.

9. Man is destined for a final calamity,
And how can one evade what is inescapable?

10. Can a man elude the convulsion of death
Where he lays his cheek in the dust as a pillow?

11. If only the nights of calamities would forbid
Reunion and allow separation.

12. The greatest thing that shook the pillar of severity
And weakened the bone and tore the skin,

13. And made a new robe out of the old one
And tailored a splendid new robe,

14. Was the affliction that befell the people of the valley
And dwelled in the valley and highlands.

15. It struck Mudar and Quraish of the sands
And Nizar's heights and Ma'ad's plains

16. With what silenced the eloquent tongues
And did not leave eloquence or ability to respond.

17. Folding the turban of the sea of knowledge
When the sea was at ebb and flow.

18. It did not recede until my hands were adorned
By its dew, sleek and soft.

19. The Prophet's canon is ruined
And the religion's path is forcibly severed.

20. The polishing sword is rusted
So the foreign sword triumphed over the native one.

21. It fulfilled whoever would restore calamity
And restrain whichever exuberance and bosom.

22. It fulfilled whoever if terror descended
Would prepare reprisal at the place of terror.

23. Kissing the earth’s face with a face
Like the full moon's disk appearing.

24. I did not expect the mouth of death
To be adorned with such pearls.

25. On a day that prolonged hearts' anguish
And diminished the chill toward the virtuous.

26. After you, the necklace of knowledge is paralyzed
While you were its pearl in the necklace of merit.

27. O full moon, should I sight another full moon
Or look upon a star to replace your face?

28. After you, I take no joy in calamities
And I resent time past that is gone.

29. Should I be arrogant with a haughty nose
And secretly harbor rancor toward fate?

30. I remain deceiving the tricks of time
And walking counter to fate and its expelling.

31. As if I mounted the hillsides of misguidance
Seeking direction but finding no guidance.

32. How honorable you were when calamities came;
My aspirations sought honor and were content.

33. I disdain that after glory came abundant
Wailing the day glory perished.

34. If the guiding moon has set, a guiding lamp remains
Whose guidance from that moon guided us better.

35. A youth who gathered merit’s edges -
Sublimity, knowledge, jest, and seriousness.

36. A youth the ages fruitlessly imitated,
Thus he lived peerlessly unique.

37. O son of daring Hāshimite leaders
Who trod upon defiance with guidance.

38. With thick shoulders among those who competed
For the highest rank, honor and glory.

39. You see them intercept like claws
When the valiant meet for combat.

40. Obeyed, clement, obeyed and mild,
Gracious, noble, generous, praised.

41. Bear patience and know that the course of events
Only struck and caused grief when it turned.

42. Restrain your tears for he is the pigeon
Who passed having been neither free nor enslaved.

43. None escaped the line of his plan
Even if he fled a course and hastened.

44. None of us remains capable
Of armor or grasping a sword.

45. The same to us are the vulnerable man
As the armed and ready man.

46. He who passed safely will not be harmed,
A father like Ali or Ahmed my grandfather.
