1. He came round with a jug seeking dew when the rooster crowed
Hail to the goblets as the dawn cock crows

2. So I got up while still relaxed
And drank from his rosy cheek a cup of comfort

3. And plucked apples from his cheeks
My comfort and his apple-cheeked salinity

4. He mixes it with spittle for me, delighted
Smiling from a mouth like first fruits

5. We live so that he may pierce the heart of the pitch dark night
With his cup, while the night is wailing lamentations

6. For me, from his folds and his eyes
Clinging, immersed, and vigilant

7. Immersed in ignorance, I do not observe
My ignorance is knowledge, and my redeemer is righteousness

8. I lower the wing of my humiliation to him
Does one whose wings are cut have any wings?

9. He is jealous of my passionate love for him
By my father, that pure jealousy

10. I aspire with my eyes toward his eyes
Man's affliction is nothing but aspiration

11. Dissatisfaction mars the beauty of contentment
And mixes jest with seriousness for us

12. The whimperer of passion yearns for nearness
With the yearning of a camel bellowing for its mistress

13. I do not swerve toward any other love
Nor has any other love swerved towards me

14. With swaying gait and slender frame
Shaking his limbs, complaining of the night

15. If I could only have him wrap himself
My heart clung to the fabric of his robe

16. Beauty haloes him like the crescent moon
Visible on his neck, not on his forehead

17. And his ear is adorned as if to entice
A hand to pluck a cluster of Pleiades

18. Then he arches, dancing so his curls
Leap from his curly youthful locks

19. O happy night that gained good fortune
And met with success and intimacy

20. With the unique and virtuous al-Jawhari

21. A young man who protected sacred law with his pens
Not with the horns of oryx or spears of lances

22. Ask the eloquent ones of this age-how many
He returned speechless, however eloquent

23. Truthful in word unlike many a young man
More mendacious in his speech than wailing women

24. Speaking words without denial
Acting without timidity or caution

25. He does not refrain from dispensing knowledge
Though most questioners seek only captious wrangling

26. He was born to a sterile mother unique
And he the son of the Living Impregnator

27. So he came endowed with the nature
To preserve honor and what is permissible

28. Sins did not cling to his tent pegs
Nor did the fires of passion afflict him

29. If you count his days in time
Each day sufficed and was a struggle

30. The enemies muted their voices toward him
As the loudest voice is muted at daybreak

31. Even if the lion roars in his jungle
The dogs of the neighborhood mute their barking

32. With his biting tongue he enlarges a wound
To his adversary, exacerbating the gashes

33. He has no habit but nobility
In character, and generous giving

34. If the noble do not win a prize
He teaches the generous to clap their hands

35. O you of white temples and bright faces
More radiant than dawn however bright it gets

36. I make plain not to obscure the clear
I do not darken bright faces however murky they become

37. His face shines with a life
I ransom those insolent faces for him!

38. And comfort came easy to his nature
- Gentler than the nature of the winds

39. A young man who won glory stands
While countless others fall short of glory’s range

40. If he surges forth fiercely to his goal
He does not divert his course from the objects of his aspiration

41. Of refined character, the blossom of dignity
To which its bee is summoned for success

42. Generosity proclaimed him one of its criers
Hail to their generosity and success!

43. Their palms are life-saving for humankind
And death-dealing to hostile foes when cries arise

44. They spur on horses dusty from journeying
Wherever the horizon looms and the day breaks

45. A people who when they had power forgave
Turning away their gazes from the squint-eyed

46. When the horizon shuddered from the cold
The rainclouds did not cease to pour down heavily

47. Suckling the clouds despite its stinginess
If the grasping hands of askers fell short
