1. The pride of the tribe, Ghālib
I will not lose hope, O seeker

2. And the dawn of guidance appeared
Pale on the cheek of the lover

3. How I yearned, like the obstructed moon
That does not rise upon the setting moon

4. Your afflictions have settled in the street
Deaf and in the decisive judge

5. You were struck by the arrow of misery, hitting the target
While the arrow of misery missed its mark

6. We overpowered you, but can a victor
Overpower the decree of the Victorious?

7. If time improves from one side
It ruins from the other side

8. It has flowed in a course we pastured
Spreading its wings, so the meadow overflowed

9. Punishment hovers over his heart
So pebbles float upon the fleeing terrified one

10. Zeal knocks the crown of glory
On the parting of the determined king

11. Unexpectedly it assails you in its concern
For a concern that makes gravel palatable

12. So he did not find from it and its enemies
The caution of the resident or the fleer

13. It roams with its spears, unleashed
Beware of the unleashed spears

14. The young man returns after passion
Returning to inexperienced incompetence

15. It calls to us terrified above us
But we did not heed the terrified caller

16. For each person there is an appointed time
By that the pen of the writer flows

17. It disappears, and how many disappearers return
And how many disappearers do not return

18. It is death behind us, crowding
Why then did you not stand at the watchtower?

19. Sweet milk flows without a milker
And the morning potion is delicious to the drinker

20. If you do not take advice from the prudent
Then refine your opinion like the unmarried

21. If you wish, make peace with the wars of time
So peace be upon the warring time

22. And do not knit your brow
Even if your bow is from an eyebrow

23. I see death closer than an eyebrow
To an eye and an eye to an eyebrow

24. Abu Muhsin, good deeds
Beget good, for the desirer

25. I granted the soul's love sincerely
And the excess of gifts is for the Giver

26. You attain wishes in ability
Though wishes are for the wisher

27. A resolve obeyed you, with no coercion
When the sword disobeys the striker

28. If it were up to me to bend the pigeon
And the reins are not upon the fleer

29. I would have turned your leg from the ship
And driven the rider's hand from you

30. You were in a smooth time
Like you, in a time of wounds

31. And the delight of the seeker's eye
Is disappointed, so miserable is the disappointed one

32. We mourned you during a perplexing time
And where are you from the wailing mourner?

33. We lost you, like a thirsty cat lost
From the spring of the water the cat sipped

34. I eulogized, though I did not fulfill
What was due from me, not even some of what was due

35. I irrigated, though I was facing life
Pouring towards the pouring life
