It delights me with a tale as if it were

ويطربني منها حديث كأنه

1. It delights me with a tale as if it were
The clear water of al-Safa flowing over my confused liver

١. ويطربني منها حديثٌ كأنه
زلال الصفا يجري على كبدي الحرى

2. You say you see in my poetry all magic
And how can my heart overcome such magic

٢. تقول ارى في شعرك السحر كله
وكيف لقلبي ان يغالبَ ذا السحرا

3. It turns me between joy and sorrow
Sometimes I see ice and sometimes embers

٣. يقلبني بين المسرة والأسى
فحيناً أرى ثلجاً وحيناً ارى جمرا

4. And if it weren't for it, your love would not have stormed my mind
And I would not have become a master freely wandering with it

٤. ولولاه لم يعصف هواك بمهجتي
ولا صرت مولىً مستقلاً بها حرا

5. And I would not have fallen into your grasp confused
And your mouth and cheek would not have touched me

٥. ولا سقطت في قبضتيك غدائري
ولا مسَّ فوك النهد مني والثغرا

6. So glory to Him who gave you the power of His spirit
And made the spirits submissively yielding to you perforce

٦. فسبحان من أعطاك قوة روحه
وأعنى لك الأرواح منقادةً قسرا

7. Be gentle with those whom you have made love-crazed
As you see a sign in the page of the universe that does not settle

٧. ترفق بمن صيرتها في الهوى كما
ترى آية في صفحة الكون لا تقرا

8. Lo! This divine poetry is immortal
And it suffices Thurayya that you cast poetry with it

٨. ألا إن ذا الشعر الالهي خالدٌ
وحسب ثريا أن تصوغ بها الشعرا
