No freshness lit the plainโ€™s face, nor promise of rain

2. Were it not for the Law we had paid it no heed
For to us every day was as good as a feast

To the Caliph; his company is joy full-blown

4. He came rushing, the train of his gown flowing free
At full gallop, though far off the goal he must see

5. As if longing to join his loved ones had wandโ€™red him wild
From outcast to honoured guide become mild

Marvellous being, he envies and fumes and disputes

7. Hail, Prince of the Faithful! For conquests have made
This feast thine, and triumphs shall come to thine aid
