1. He who overrates himself, deems grand
Pride enters him for which he is too small
١. من كبُّرت عن قدره خُطةٌ
داخَلَهُ من أَجلها الكبرُ
2. And he whose ambition soars too high
No scheme his heart can entertain at all
٢. ومن سَمت هِمّته لم يَكُن
لخطّةٍ في نفسه قَدرُ
3. Man's authority is heady wine; so long
As he retains it, drunk with it remains
٣. ولايةُ الانسانِ سَكرٌ فَما
دامَت له دام به السُّكر
4. Vex not thyself at those who love this world
No man can patience have for worldly gains
٤. مغايظ الدُّنيا وأربابها
ليس عليها لامرىء صبر
5. Leave them to time and all the chance it brings
Till thou behold what works the hand of fate
٥. دعهم مع الدهر واحداثِه
حتى ترى ما يصنع الدَّهر
