1. I lost sleep to lightning that struck close,
As if its flash touched my eyes an intruder,
١. إِنّي أَرِقتُ لِبَرقٍ ضافَني سارِ
كَأَنَّ في العَينِ مِنهُ مَسَّ عُوّارِ
2. Or hot pepper whose cover peeled off
When its hotness became bare,
٢. أَو حَرَّ فُلفُلَةٍ كانَت بِها قَذِيَت
لَمّا بَرى قِشرَها عَن حَرِّها الباري
3. Worries, when they recur to afflict you,
Will become chronic illness you accommodate
٣. إِنَّ الهُمومَ إِذا عادَتكَ وارِدَةً
إِن لَم تُفَرِّج لَها وَرداً بِإِصدارِ
4. Unless you relieve them with acceptance,
And busied you with needs and invocations,
٤. كانَت عَلَيكَ سقاماً تَستَكينُ لَهُ
وَأَنصَبَتكَ لِحاجاتٍ وَإِذكارِ
5. So I became, in prison the guards guard me
After roaming freely in righteousness and lands
٥. فَصِرتُ في السِجنِ الحُرّاسُ تَحرُسُني
بَعدَ التَلَصُّصِ في بِرٍّ وَأَمصارِ
6. And the sail of a ship sailing in a dark night
With its rider roaming in the darkness of night,
٦. وَسَيرِ حَرفٍ تَجوبُ اللَيلَ جافِلَةً
عَومَ السَفينَةِ في ذي اللُجَّةِ الجاري
7. O my soul do not despair, I am for a term
And every soul is for a day and decree
٧. يا نَفسُ لا تَجزَعي إِنّي إِلى أَمَدٍ
وَكُلُّ نَفسٍ إِلى يَومٍ وَمِقدارِ
8. What brings my day closer to my hope’s extent
Is my life's shyness from my travels and wandering
٨. وَما يُقَرِّبُ يَومي مِن مَدى أَمَلي
فاقَني حَياءَكِ تَرحالي وَتِسياري
9. I am to a deadline, if you know
To which my knowledge and traces extend
٩. إِنّي إِلى أَجَلٍ إِن كُنتِ عالِمَةً
إِلَيهِ ما مُنتَهى عِلمي وَآثاري
10. To God you belong, so if He protects you, adhere
And if you lie, God suffices me against harm
١٠. لِلَّهِ أَنتِ فَإِن يَعصِمكِ فَاِعتَصِمي
وَإِن كَذَبتِ فَحَسبِيَ اللَهُ مِن جارِ
11. Supplicate Him secretly and invoke Him openly
And Allah knows my secrets and openness
١١. إِدعيهِ سِرّاً وَناديهِ عَلانِيَةً
وَاللَهُ يَعلَمُ إِعلاني وَإِسراري
12. Happiness in life is not for one of hope
But happy is he who is saved from Hellfire
١٢. وَما السَعادَةُ في الدُنيا لِذي أَمَلٍ
إِنَّ السَعيدَ الَّذي يَنجو مِنَ النارِ
13. Like rain on your prison from prisons and its dwellers
With constant downpour and endless water
١٣. سُقياً لِسِجنِكَ مِن سِجنٍ وَساكِنه
بِديمَةٍ مِن ذَهابِ الماءِ مِدرارِ
14. Binding its valleys, awning and covering
Weak and strong, fast and slow
١٤. بِكُلِّ جَون رَواياهُ مُطَبِّقَةٌ
واهي العَزالي مِنَ الجَوزاءِ جَرّارِ
15. I called but they would not hear me
Abu Al-Walid, and below me is an ever-turning prison
١٥. وَقَد دَعَوتُ وَما آلو لِأُسمِعَهُ
أَبا الوَليدِ وَدوني سِجنُ دَوّارِ
16. In the belly of elevated architecture, its exit locked
With impenetrable gate and strong guard
١٦. في جَوفِ ذي شُرُفاتٍ سُدَّ مَخرَجُهُ
بِبابِ ساجٍ أَمينِ القِفلِ صَرّارِ
17. I call him a wronged one's call to give me victory
Then I implore the All-Capable and Caution Him
١٧. أَدعوهُ دَعوَةَ مَظلومٍ لِيَنصُرَني
ثُمَّ اِستَغَثَتُ بِذي نُعمى وَأَخطارِ
18. I complain to the Benevolent Ibrahim of my injustice
With no crime, and my eviction from home
١٨. أَشكو إِلى الخَيرِ إِبراهيمَ مَظلَمَتي
في غَيرِ جُرمٍ وَإِخراجي مِنَ الدارِ
19. Time went to extremes tying me up
And shackling me, closing in with a nail
١٩. الدَهرَ أَرسُفُ في كَبلٍ أُعالِجُه
وَحَلقَةٍ قارَبوا فيها بِمِسمارِ
20. I turn in it my day, then my night reversal
Is gloomy, bound in chains,
٢٠. أَدورُ فيهِ نَهاري ثُمَّ مُنقَلِبي
بِاللَيلِ أَدهمُ مَزرورٌ بِأَزرارِ
21. As if it is between two bedsheets, both extended
By lovely, delicate, handkerchief layers,
٢١. كَأَنَّهُ بَينَ إِستارَينِ قَدَّهُما
سُراةُ أَورَقَ مَطلِيٍّ مِنَ القارِ
22. O closest of people to praise and honor
And furthest of people from blame and shame
٢٢. يا أَقرَبَ الناسِ مِن حَمدٍ وَمَكرَمَةٍ
وَأَبعَدَ الناسِ مِن ذَمٍّ وَمِن عارِ
23. Greatest of people in pardoning when able
A fierce lion to his enemies, harmful
٢٣. وَأَعظَمَ الناسِ عَفواً عِندَ مَقدَرةٍ
وَلَيثَ غابٍ عَلى أَعدائِهِ ضارِ
24. A flowers bouquet that kills the thorns' sharpness
And holds it between fangs and claws
٢٤. وردٌ هِزَبرٌ تُميتُ القَرنَ صَولَتَهُ
وَضَمُّهُ بَينَ أَنيابٍ وَأَظفارِ
25. Bestow on me some of your gifts
Of relations' sweetness and bitterness
٢٥. أَنعِم عَلَيَّ بِنِعمى مِنكَ سابِغَةٍ
مِن سيبِ أَروعَ نفاعٍ وَضَرارِ
26. Truest Al-Yamamah is he who keeps his word
Taking his hand with no fragile rope
٢٦. أَوفى اليَمامَةِ مَن يَعلَق بِذِمَّتِهِ
تَأَخُذ يَداهُ بِحَبلٍ غَيرِ خُوارِ
