ما نسيناك

1. He who adorned you with eloquence, O friend, may God protect him, the Majestic, and protect you!
How can spring complain of winter's cold when it has not yet smelled your fragrance!

١. جَلَّ مَنْ بالبيان، يا صَاح، زَانَكْ
صَانَهُ الله ذو الجلالَ، وصانَك!

2. Excuse illness if it afflicts you, for illness cannot sense and appreciate your eloquence.
If those nights knew who you were, they would not have afflicted your body with sickness,

٢. كيف يشكو بَرْدَ الشتاء ربيعٌ؟
أوَ ما شَمَّ أنفُه ريحانَك!

3. And kept you well for rhymes, praising with your eloquence.
We have not forgotten you, my friend, but we have not counted ourselves your peers.

٣. اعذُرِ السُّقْمَ إنْ عَرَاك؛ فما للسّـ
ـقم حِسٌّ بهِ يذوق بيانك

4. If I did not send you my poems, it is because I fear the stones of your critics.
Do not blame me; for when my poetry devil sees your devil, he hides.

٤. لو دَرتْ من تكون تلك الليالي
ما أصابت بعلَّةٍ جُثْمَانك

5. It is not my fault that poetry raises you high, elevating your status among the stars.
You are among the stars, my friend, wandering, so I have an excuse for not knowing your place.

٥. ولأبْقَتْكَ للقوافِي مُعافىً
تَبْتَنِيها مُشَيِّدًا ببيانك

6. O friend, this is my book of poetry, so grant its shortcomings your forgiveness.

٦. ما نسيناكَ، يا صديقي، ولكنْ
ما عدَدْنَا نفوسَنَا أقْرَانك
