٤. أوَّلُها جوامعُ البيانِ
وأصلُها معرفةُ اللِّسانِ

5. For in metaphor and interpretation,
The legends of rational minds have gone astray.

٥. فإِنَّ في المَجازِ والتَّأويلِ
ضَلَّتْ أساطيرُ ذَوي العُقُولِ

6. Until you know those structures,
Singular, plural, and dual.

٦. حتّى إِذا عَرَفتَ تلكَ الأَبنيهْ
واحدَها وجَمعها والتَّثنيهْ

7. You seek whichever science you wish,
Whether prose or verse.

٧. طَلبتَ ما شِئْتَ منَ العُلومِ
ما بينَ مَنثورٍ إلى مَنظومِ

8. So cure the disease of poetry,
With prosody and correct language.

٨. فَداوِ بالإعرابِ والعَروضِ
داءَك في الإملالِ والقريضِ

9. Neither did Galenus philosophize,
Nor the author of the Canon, Ptolemy.

٩. كِلاهُمَا طِبٌّ لداءِ الشِّعرِ
والفَّظِ من لَحنٍ بهِ وكسْرِ

10. Nor he called Hermes,
Nor the author of Arcana and Euclid.

١٠. ما فَلْسَفَ النَّيطسُ جالينوسُ

١٢٦. ثمّ الزِّياداتُ على الأَجزاءِ
مَوجودةٌ تُعرفُ بالأَسماءِ

127. No mention of it came in poetry.
Among the briefest parts and hemistichs,

١٢٧. وإنّما تَكونُ في الغاياتِ
تُزادُ في أواخرِ الأَبياتِ

128. Its letters twenty in scansion.
The hemistich composed on clauses

١٢٨. وكُلُّها في شَطرهِ مَوجودُ
منها المُرَفّلُ الّذي يَزيدُ

129. Four evenly spaced.
This the tester has tried

١٢٩. حَرْفينِ في الجُزءِ على اعْتدالِهِ
مُحرَّكاً وساكناً في حولهِ

130. Of all the Arabs said upon it.
Anything they did not say upon

١٣٠. وذاكَ فيما لا يجوزُ الزَّحفُ
فيه ولا يُعزى إليهِ الضَّعفُ

131. We did not consider it.
We say nothing but what they said

١٣١. وفيه أَيضاً يدخُلُ المُذالُ
مُقَيِّداً في كلِّ ما يُقالُ

132. For our speech contradicts it.
If differing from it were allowed in verses

١٣٢. وهو الذي يَزيدُ حرفاً ساكناً
على اعتدالِ جُزئهِ مُباينا

133. It would be allowed in language.
Al-Khalil allowed that

١٣٣. ومثله المُسبغُ من هذي العِللْ
حَرْفٌ تَزيدهُ على شطْرِ الرَّملْ

134. But I don't say what he says.
For he contradicted its meaning

١٣٤. فإنْ رأيتَ الجُزءَ لم يَذهب مَعا
بالانتقاصِ فهو وافٍ فاسمعا

135. And the sword shines though flawed.
He made the early view original

١٣٥. وإنْ يكُنْ أَذهبَهُ النُّقصانُ
فافْهمْ ففي قولي لك البَيانُ

136. Then allowed this, though not its like.
The scholar may slip

١٣٦. فذلك المَجزوءُ في النِّصفينِ
إذا انتقصتَ منهما جُزأَينِ

137. And the ink may betray the scribe.
To Al-Khalil there is no peer

١٣٧. والبيتُ إنْ نَقصتَ منهُ شطرهُ
فذلكَ المَشطورُ فافهمْ أَمرهُ

138. In all that comes of matters.
But in it he is unprecedented,

١٣٨. وإنْ نَقصتَ منه بعد الشّطرِ
جُزءاً صحيحاً من أَخيرِ الصَّدرِ

139. None before or after like him.
So praise be to Allah for His blessings,

١٣٩. وكانَ ما يَبقى على جُزأَينِ
فذلكَ المَنهوكُ غَيرَ مَيْنِ

140. Much praise, and His boons.
O King, kings bow to Him,

١٤٠. فاسمع فهذي صِفة الدوائرِ
وَصْفَ عليمٍ بالعَروضِ خابِرِ

141. He has no partner in dominion.
Make righteous the intentions of Your servant Abdullah

١٤١. دوائرٌ تعيا على ذِهنِ الحَذِقْ
خمسٌ عليهن الخُطوطُ والحَلَقْ

142. And grace him through Your bounty with his flock.

١٤٢. فما لها من الخُطوطِ البائنهْ
دلائلٌ على الحُروفِ السَّاكنهْ

١٤٣. والحَلقاتِ المُتجوِّفاتِ
علامَةٌ للمتحرِّكاتِ

١٤٤. والنُّقطُ التي على الخُطوطِ
علامةٌ تُعدُّ للسُّقوطِ

١٤٥. والحلق التي عليها يُنْقطُ
تسكن أحياناً وحِيناً تَسقُطُ

١٤٦. والنُّقطُ التي بأجوافِ الحَلقْ
لمبتدا الشُّطورِ منها يُخترقْ

١٤٧. فانظُر تجدْ من تحتها أسماءَها
مكتوبةً قد وُضعتْ إِزاءَها

١٤٨. والنُّقطتانِ موضعَ التعاقُبِ
ومثلَ ذاكَ موضعَ التَّراقبِ

١٤٩. وهذه صُورةُ كُلِّ واحده
مِنها ومَعنى فَسرها على حِدَه

١٥٠. أَولها دائرةُ الطويلِ
وهي ثمانٍ لذوي التَّفضيلِ

١٥١. مُقسَّم الشَّطر على أَرباعِ
بينَ خُماسيٍّ إلى سُباعي

١٥٢. حُروفُه عشرونَ بعدَ أَربعَه
قد بَيَّنوا لكُلِّ حرفٍ موضعه

١٥٣. تنفكُّ منها خَمسةٌ شُطورُ
يفصلها التفعيلُ والتَّقديرُ

١٥٤. منها الطويلُ والمَديد بعدهُ
ثمَّ البَسيطُ يحكمونَ سَرْدهُ

١٥٥. ثلاثةٌ قالتْ عليها العربُ
واثنانِ صدُّوا عنهما ونَكبوا

١٥٦. وهذه صُورتُها كما تَرى
وذكرُها مبيَّناً مفسَّرا

١٥٧. وهذه الثانية المخصوصَه
بالسببِ الثَّقيلِ والمَنقوصَه

١٥٨. أجزاؤها ثلاثةٌ مُسبَّعه
قد كَرهوا أَن يَجعلُوها أَربعَه

١٥٩. لأَنّها تَخرجُ عن مِقدارِهمْ
في جملةِ المَوزون من أشعارهمْ

١٦٠. فهي على عِشرينَ بعد واحد
من الحُروفِ ما بها من زائدِ

١٦١. ينفكُّ منها وافرٌ وكاملُ
وثالثٌ قد حارَ فيه الجاهلُ

١٦٢. والدارةُ الثالثةُ التي حكتْ
في قَدرها الثانيةَ التي مَضَتْ

١٦٣. في عِدةِ الأَجزاءِ والحُروفِ
وليس في الثَّقيلِ والخفيفِ

١٦٤. ينفكُّ منها مِثلُ ما ينفكُّ
من تلك حقاً ليس فيه شكُّ

١٦٥. ترفُلُ من ديباجها حُلل
من هَزجٍ أو رَجزٍ أو رملِ

١٦٦. وهذه صورتُها مبيَّنه
بحَلْيها ووَشْيها مُزَيَّنَه

١٦٧. ورابعُ الدَّوائر المَسْرودَهْ
أجزاؤها ثلاثةٌ مَعْدوده

١٦٨. عَجيبةٌ قد حارَ فيها الوَصْفُ
عِشرونَ حرفاً عَدُّها وحَرْفُ

١٦٩. مِثلَ الّتي تَقدَّمتْ من قَبلها
وشَكْلها مُخالفٌ لشَكْلها

١٧٠. بَدِيعةٌ أحْكم في تَدْبيرها
بالوَتِد المَفْروق في شطورها

١٧١. ينفكُّ منها ستَّةٌ مَقُولَه
مِن بينها ثلاثةٌ مَجْهُولَهْ

١٧٢. وكلُّ هذه السَّتة المَشْطورَهْ
مَعْروفة لأَهلها مَخْبورهْ

١٧٣. أَوّلُها السَّريعُ ثم المُنسرحْ
ثم الخَفيفُ بعدهُ ثَمَّ وَضَحْ

١٧٤. وبعدَهَ مُضارعُ ومُقتضبْ
شَطرانِ مَجزوءانِ في قَولِ العَربْ

١٧٥. وبعدها المُجتثُّ أحلى شَطْرِ
يُوجدُ مَجزوءاً لأهلِ الشِّعرِ

١٧٦. وبعدها خامسةُ الدَّوائرِ
للمُتقاربِ الَّذي في الآخِرِ

١٧٧. ينفكُّ منها شَطْره وشَطْرُ
لم يأتِ في الأَشعارِ منه الذِّكرُ

١٧٨. مِن أقصرِ الأَجزاء والشُّطورِ
حُروفُه عشرونَ في التَّقديرِ

١٧٩. مؤلَّف الشَّطر على فواصِلِ
مخَمَّساتٍ أرْبعٍ مَواثِلِ

١٨٠. هذا الذي جَرَّبهُ المُجَرِّبُ
من كُلِّ ما قالتْ عليه العربُ

١٨١. فكُلُّ شيءٍ لم تَقُلْ عليهِ
فإنَّنا لم نَلتفتْ إليْهِ

١٨٢. ولا نَقولُ غيرَ ما قد قالوا
لأنَّه من قَولنا مُحالُ

١٨٣. وإنّه لو جازَ في الأَبياتِ
خلافُها لجازَ في اللّغاتِ

١٨٤. وقد أَجازَ ذلكَ الخليلُ
ولا أَقولُ فيه ما يَقولُ

١٨٥. لأَنه ناقَضَ في مَعناهُ
والسيفُ قد يَنُبو وفيه ماهُ

١٨٦. إذ جعَلَ القولَ القديمَ أَصلَهُ
ثم أَجازَ ذا وليسَ مثلَهُ

١٨٧. وقد يَزِلُّ العالِمُ النِّحريرُ
والحَبرُ قد يَخُونهُ التَّحبيرُ

١٨٨. وليسَ للخليلِ من نَظيرِ
في كُلِّ ما يأتي من الأُمورِ

١٨٩. لكنَّه فيه نَسيجُ وحده
ما مثْلُه مِن قبلهِ وبَعدهِ

١٩٠. فالحمدُ للَّه على نَعْمائهِ
حمداً كثيراً وعلى آلائهِ

١٩١. يا مَلكاً ذلَّتْ لهُ المُلوكُ
ليسَ له في مُلكهِ شَريكُ

١٩٢. ثبِّتْ لعبدِ اللَّهِ حُسنَ نيَّته
واعطفه بالفضل على رعيَّته
