لا غرو إن نال منك السقم والضرر

1. No wonder if illness and harm befall you,
The sun itself may be eclipsed, let alone the moon.

١. لا غَرْوَ إِنْ نالَ مِنْكَ السُّقْمُ والضَّررُ
قَدْ تُكْسَفُ الشَّمْسُ لا بَلْ يُخْسَفُ القَمَرُ

2. O you, whose waning moon-like beauty is fading,
My hearing and sight are sacrificed for your light.

٢. يا غُرَّةَ القَمَرِ الذَّاوي غضارَتُها
فِداً لِنُورِكَ مِنِّي السَّمْعُ والبصَرُ

3. If your body is afflicted with some ailment,
So the sturdy pillars are shaken down.

٣. إن يُمسِ جِسْمُكَ مَوْعوكاً بصالِيةٍ
فهكَذا يُوعكُ الضِّرغامَةُ الهَصِرُ

4. You are the sword, if its strokes fail to hit,
It is still not what the sharp blade fails to do.

٤. أنتَ الحُسامُ فإنْ تُفللْ مَضارِبُهُ
فقبْلهُ مَا يُفلُّ الصَّارِمُ الذَّكَرُ

5. A spirit of glory in a revered body,
As though the dawn were bursting through his cheeks.

٥. رُوحٌ مِنَ المَجْد في جُثمان مَكرُمَةٍ
كأنَّما الصُّبْحُ مِنْ خَدَّيْهِ يَنْفجِرُ

6. Had anything made it suffer save destiny,
I would denounce that, but destiny made it suffer.

٦. لَو غالَ مَجْلودَهُ شَيءٌ سِوى قَدَرٍ
أكْبَرْتُ ذَاكَ وَلكِنْ غالَهُ القَدَرُ
