The free man is not content with the attainment of a single honor,

والحر لا يكتفي من نيل مكرمة

1. The free man is not content with the attainment of a single honor,
Until he aspires to that which lies beyond it.

١. وَالحُرُّ لا يَكْتَفي مِنْ نَيْلِ مَكْرُمَةٍ
حَتَّى يَرُومَ الَّتي مِنْ دُونِهَا الْعَطَبُ

2. He is driven by a hope beyond it, hastened by a term,
If satisfaction restrains him, desire calls him on.

٢. يَسْعى بِهِ أَمَلٌ مِنْ دُونهُ أَجَلٌ
إِنْ كفَّهُ رَهَبٌ يَسْتَدْعِهِ رَغَبُ

3. Therefore it was that Moses asked his Lord to show him,
"Let me look upon You," though the request was bold.

٣. لِذَاكَ مَا سَالَ مُوسَى رَبَّهُ أَرِني
أَنْظُرْ إِلَيْكَ وَفي تَسْالِهِ عَجَبُ

4. He seeks increase in favors already bestowed,
Though he is the chosen one, graced with revelation and scriptures.

٤. يَبْغي التَّزَيُّدَ فِيما نَالَ مِنْ كَرَمٍ
وَهْوَ النَّجِيُّ لَدَيْه الوَحْيُ والكُّتُبُ
