1. You are far from a fire that grows weaker
When water is poured on its burning embers

2. You consoled me for what you saw, and consoled me
For the patient at a time of consolation

3. Who deserves the reward of the patient ones, while I
Have a slight affliction among grave calamities?!

4. Why didn’t you weep for the crescent moon rather than say
“Patience for the son of the full moon and the son of brightness”

5. The land laughs at the sky when it weeps
And I see them both weeping at my weeping

6. So look at the abode of tribulation, how
Two rains have met, one from earth, one from sky

7. And living was enough, and crying would have sufficed, had
Our tears flowed without blood

8. Were it not for the shedding of tears the day he died
The rocks of sadness and the plain would have melted

9. Can one who finds no comfort from distress restrain his tears?
He whose face and hand held

10. Two kinds of water: the water of love and the water of shame
The days destroyed him, so the enemy took vengeance

11. And how many an enemy I took vengeance on through him
The sword was, and no sooner it was gone than it went

12. And a departing one from it departed after its departure
Time was rich through him and rich through his name

13. So it adorned him, the fragrance of wealth and the fragrance of song
If every noble son were like him

14. Fatherhood would have prevented weeping for sons
Noble fathers, no matter whom they beget

15. Bolster the edifice of glory through sons
Men strive without attaining through their striving

16. What he attained in nine of the sublime
If he had reached twenty, his sublimity would have taught him

17. All knowledge, and made him the completest of the perfect
Through him the living bowed down, then when he was gone

18. The dead bowed down before the living
My craving is for a basil plant that went to

19. An abode of reward—would that my lodging were in it!
The death rattle of his soul emerged from his nostrils

20. So I witnessed through him the death of martyrs
And I looked at the pieces of armor, but

21. The stratagems of fate did not wipe out the stratagems of the wise
And when God desires the death of one brought low

22. He hides the cure from the grief-stricken one
They cured him, those who cured him, until he said to me

23. “Bring me no cure from such harm”
I do not complain that I was deprived of response

24. Were it not for public difficulties, my supplication would have ceased
The good is in what his Creator chose, so

25. Evil has turned into good
God makes blessing easy through

26. His decrees, and prosperity harmful
A lascivious apple was offered to him

27. By one of the maidservants, but he gestured refusal
Had speech been able, he would have said plainly:

28. “The apples of the gardens of eternity are my cure”
Greetings my son, through you is the good pleasure of a mother

29. Who kissed him on the cheek of a Houri
He was married as a bride, and the dowry is her recitation,

30. While the Houri is the delight of the eyes of reciters
Rejoice, with a tranquil heart, not provoked,

31. You have left a house of hardship and misery
Your spirit never bowed down to baseness in youth

32. And none but you did my spirit love in its passions
Sacred you are, O spirit of the slain without hands

33. In him the stirring of lions for ferocious attacks
When the thousands harmonize under his banner

34. It gives tidings, most truthful of tidings
Hear the writhes of Malik in his coffin

35. And see the standing of the daring, piercing cavalry charge
They charged him, so he charged them though weaponless, while

36. Their vanguard was behind and their rear ahead
Their spears were long, but when here they fell short

37. They went back, lowering their gaze, closing their eyes
They were angry with fate for the magnitude of his disaster

38. Content with the decree of the Ordainer of fates
They bore the firmest pain, so they endured gracefully

39. And graceful endurance seems to me the finest of opinions
They compensate for Abdullah the Wealthy, though if only

40. They found him bearing the burdens in stead
A cloak with which I repel the blows of the loss of his company

41. While the free man is weakened by the blows of fools
Woe if the death of my offspring means

42. The death of every preserver and loyalty
Ninety years of life spanned nine years

43. In which he erected for me a brilliant minaret
The cubit arm of glory did not measure its breadth

44. Other than excellently, no mistakes in his steps
On his blessed Thursday, even the unlucky breathes

45. Anxiety, such is the resolve of the fortunate
As though it were the day of Arabism, pledged

46. Captive, while Saturday is the day of redemption
Going early to his mosque, running, preceding

47. Like the dawn, escaped from the hands of darkness
Clarifying to his embryo, chanting

48. The remembrance before the warbling of branches
At night he would recite as though he sought

49. Refuge all day in refuge
He almost guides his own educating soul

50. Making its guidance manifest through offering
Abdullah the Wealthy, you had joy while absent

51. While remorse remains my companion night and day
I hope from God for reward, for I

52. Am torn apart, while the whelp is you
When they brought you perplexed, as though

53. Walking in darkness to bury the light
They prayed over you, all succeeding, save one man

54. Who slackened in devotion to seize the spoils
You were hope, and now you are God’s neighbor

55. In his gardens, while your father remains behind in hopes
My intercessor, who do I have through your nearness

56. As intercessor, for beauty and ugliness are not equal?
