1. The delight of my eyes made them burn,
And the comfort of my soul made it mourn.

2. My soul is a garden of narcissus bent over,
That withered what was most beautiful of it.

3. May God erase it when He manifested
Through it the world and adorned it.

4. It is as if I am a cat that did not kiss
Its daisies and lilies.

5. Time has robbed my hand
Of the most precious things from the throats.

6. I wish my term had ended when
The Arabs summoned their tongues.

7. And inspired them and made them speak
And cite examples and stab with them.

8. It reminds me when my thoughts sleep,
And worries are the sleep of its eyes.

9. And whenever I doubt
Things I ascertain.

10. And how many signs were hidden
Whose meanings He made clear.

11. And others before they were revealed
He dictated and they memorized them.

12. And if you dictated to him a hundred verses
He mastered them.

13. And his teacher was absent when he read them
So he mispronounced them.

14. And no wonder about my dear one,
Isn’t the sea its source?

15. Am I not his father and he is my son?
And this is what proved it.

16. The beloved whom when I feed
With it the love makes me weak.

17. So if I gain his intercession
Tomorrow when there is fear it will give me security.

18. Perhaps my lips will protect my body
From the intense heat and make it easier.

19. With a mercy from the One who accepts it
I will reside where He resides me.

20. I buried my son so people said
Bury the sun.

21. And He washed him with His Kawthar
And sanctified him and protected him.

22. And with prayers He perfumed him
And in lights He enshrouded him.

23. And He made the earth his homeland, no but
The gardens of eternity made it his homeland.

24. I obeyed patience during times
When life dyed me.

25. And in Abd al-Ghani my son
I disobeyed patience when it prohibited.

26. And how can I restrain my sorrow
And these tears declare it.

27. When the tears flow,
Patience cannot restrain them.

28. I loved the life for his sake
So he left me to make me weep.

29. My flasks are far
So I don’t like to fetch them.

30. I hated procreation out of fear
For sterility to protect me.

31. My soul described those it loved,
Made them permitted and branches.

32. And this was the greatest of them
And the most fortunate and blessed.

33. I hoped with the death of four
The wish of my soul and its refuge.

34. The Messenger of God will fulfill
His promise that contained it.

35. I determined my pursuits to be pure
So time cannot spoil them.

36. May God disfigure time, a father
Whose children are black, and He wounded them.

37. It is as if they transgressed against it so how much
Strife and schemes it made.

38. It is harmful to its children, eating them
So how can it spare the fat ones?

39. And which father turns
A millstone against his children to grind them?

40. We saw the bravest horseman
Become cowardly at death.

41. So what deceits, vileness, and trials
The life has, and how it betrays,

42. Severs those who love it,
And strangles the newborns it breastfeeds.

43. I see the viciousness of life tomorrow
Leave it and become soft.

44. So why do I delude myself with it
When I see its betrayal?

45. Beloved of my heart, let my lips meet yours
Wherever you allow them to.

46. With a residence I asked, so say
To a longing one you gave him residence.

47. I extended my hands to the sky
To have mercy, O Keeper of it.

48. I did wrong with all my deeds
So enable me to do them well.
