1. I was delighted by nothing but grief's attire
Joy with sorrow is attire indeed

2. By God, oh holiday that smiled upon people
Do not meet me except while frowning

3. Is it the wont of the ardent on the eve of his feast
And his morn except weeping and sobbing?

4. My feast is bereavement, though I sacrificed not
The human of my eye in my blood bathed

5. I closed my door to the three feasts
Fearing weeping, gloaters sitting

6. Oh Lord, a weeping woman reproached me
An act by fawners, vile it is

7. She said, you squandered your right with them
Why don't you flatter them, and you are cunning?

8. Will their abundance benefit you
When the noble among them is stingy?

9. I answered her, though knowing
The share of the foe, even if paltry, is felicity

10. What could they give me, when I am a man
In whose possession are coins of kings, worthless?

11. Evil are the times, as you see, and its people
Every man in his affection, crafty

12. Enough. I will take from them guidance and spoils
From them, God's reward and intimacy

13. When my companion is delighted by his cup
Cups of love circle around me

14. The fire of sorrow in my ribs is kindled
Its flames from my sighs ignited

A sword for me is sharpened and unsheathed

16. A dear one in my hand snatched
A branch of beauty, though its dignity

17. Refuses to be seen supple
Eyes weakened over it since it was planted

18. So it withered as if the planted bore no fruit
Watered by the water of youth aflame

19. Wearing beauty, the worn is rent
Man's edifice is not stable

20. Until established on eternity's foundation
And perhaps youth calls one to guidance

21. While the bending of the head and old age leads astray
Woe to a people who see not their guidance

22. Until cheeks and heads turn white
My son, since elevating you to the sublime

23. Neither John nor Idris was pleased
Al-Qayrawan is your father's protectorate and not

24. A quarter of Al-Qayrawan remains unharvested
We are the shining stars, and our Egypt

25. A heaven, by our spears' points guarded
We strut above horses in the shadows of spears

26. A lion kindled in the morn and mud
But misfortunes befell us, among which

27. The mother of sorrows, it is she who darkened

28. In time to be expected or does your father despair?
My blood, though filled with blood and gardens

30. Truly, palaces on the sorrowful are prisons

31. Their felicity is ill-omened misfortune
I roam about watering places fifthly

32. So when I drink, their sweetness is brackish
Two epithets, this inverted, that not

33. Both are beautiful, though the inverted ugly
Abdul Ghani's beauty adorned him

34. And India was beautified but not blemished
He who settled his world and resolved its matter

35. A child, though knitting his brow and suspicious
He undid what the elders knotted with his opinion

36. And intended the meaning of a thing when analogizing
His talents proven so none denigrated them

37. And his sublimity towering so none envied
I sensed in him tranquility and piety, his two steps

38. Repelling Satan away from them
The clouds of your eyes rained eulogies

39. And moons and suns praised me
So I will establish a mourning with the wailing women

40. While you are a bridegroom among the houris
Gladden your father with mercy and intercede for him

41. May He the Holy Lord have mercy on him
Woe to him from what he fears tomorrow

42. If your radiant face is absent from him
Behold, the frowning eyelids of the sorrowful one

43. Until he sees you and his head bent
You were entrusted with love of the Qur'an

44. Until your tablet recited dirges for you
The company you kept distracted you from the book

45. At dawn while your mind on impiety
Indeed, an ignorant gang corrupted you

46. Whether they were delighted or on Thursday and Friday
You did not mix with them as if mantled

47. And as if each of them muted
With David's melodies you recited, so had

48. A priest listened, he would have submitted
How different we are! You lived in blessed security

49. And I dwell where the bells startle me
In an abode of Islam and peace for the enemies

50. The Christians, its people, and the Magians
Before your visage disappeared into the soil

51. I never thought the stars possess it

52. The lion of evil from what filled its eyes
Thought your father's protectorate was ripe for the taking

And the birds from seeing you and your piety

54. Thought you a mythical beast or peacock
By God, when dejected at adversities

55. How stubborn souls are for the noble
Had you been my confidant during dark nights

56. Nothing of their sins would have damaged me
Had your life reached fifteen pilgrimages

57. You would have overcome the enemy fivefold on horseback
The flags of knowledge summoned you their imam

58. And Iraq sought you as its crown
But an unbending hand seized you

59. The ruled and ruler equal in its grip

60. Death wrote upon the sons of life so neither
Solomon nor Bilqis was safe

61. Ask every stubborn tyrant, what is left for him
After palaces, except a narrow grave?

62. He trampled the rulers with his steeds until
The crown of kingship by him was trodden

63. My tears at the beautifully grave site
Forever, even if the beloved is imprisoned

64. Perhaps I did not visit him when absent, does
My anguish around it being celebrated heal?

65. Oh, would that I knew—while sins are many
And assuming the best of the generous, mean

66. I was frightened. Would his recompense
Be the son of the All-Holy, his spirit sanctified?

67. Oh, you who with an illness is tested
In it is agonizing torment for the patient

68. And since a child knew no smallness in him
And was pure, not knowing impurity

69. The sun of glory, had its time emerged
Kavus would have come to take from its rays

70. We would have eased your worries, o disgust of life
With our souls, if exhalation were possible
