1. My tears provide no relief except at daybreak,
So my eye devours humanity at sunset.

2. Alas my eye! Its delight has been stolen,
And its radiance has faded whenever it has blinked.

3. The one I parted with was not just my child, but my own liver,
So whoever was gathered from my family has now scattered.

4. I care not after he left me,
Whether it was said the crow croaked or uttered a cry.

5. I do not love offspring after my son, nor does
A beautiful woman hope for love from me.

6. By my father, a blossoming branch has withered when it flowered,
By my father, a star has fallen when it rose!

7. The sun split open its dress over him,
So the eyelids wept with me while the dress was torn.

8. My tears before losing him
Were held captive by patience, and now have been unleashed.

9. A sickness destroyed him, its beginning
Was the mother's heartache whenever it is recalled.

10. His mother betrayed him, but a concubine
Proved kinder than her, pure and devoted.

11. She grew attached to him as he became attached to her,
And loved him with true devotion, not just passion.

12. She risked her life over him and defended him,
Sobbing over him morning and evening.

13. The board he would write on, she wished to erase
So she could see what he had written and drawn.

14. I am overflowing from the wine of my bereavement,
While passion makes me drunk, and grief bewildered.

15. Do not blame me for crying - had my heart been
A deaf rock, it would have cracked from weeping!

16. Jacob cried until his eyes turned white
From copious tears in his deep sorrow.

17. Job complained to God, and God had promised
To return what was stolen.

18. Then He fulfilled it with the return of Joseph,
And the wrongly accused brother when theft was claimed.

19. And if one who still hopes grieves,
Then one who has lost all hope has more right to grieve!

20. Hardship has shredded my liver in front of me,
And shown me how my moon became eclipsed.

21. Sickness extinguished his light despite my efforts,
And drool that poured forth whenever he was hushed.

22. So we both are smeared with blood,
And whenever he drools, I weep from the burning.

23. Was his face that of a slaughtered sacrifice,
With his skin of beauty now torn?

24. Or a sick one harmed by the sickness,
As his flesh faded and skin became thin?

25. His suffering was from suffering that
Would leave the eyelids wounded from lack of sleep.

26. He would sometimes sleep three times in a row,
Then the spasms would increase as restlessness intensified.

27. When they were surprised by his sleep,
I would say, God has not deprived him of gentleness.

28. He would heal me when I kissed him,
And if I spoke to him, his mouth would respond.

29. He would heal me while he still breathed,
But who can heal when the breath is gone?

30. The night of his death, he called me, and he
Kissed my head and embraced me while sobbing.

31. As he perspired from his fever he said,
“This is rosewater, not sweat.”

32. I rubbed myself against his deathbed,
And I wished that I too would perish.

33. I do not know - did the Angel of Death come
To extinguish a flame, or did he arrive perfumed?

34. A garden whose flowers have changed -
Every tulip, chamomile, and daisy has withered.

35. The narcissus and rose have wilted,
And the proud iris has drooped.

36. It has become a meadow of herbage
From which destructive insects emerge.

37. So it brought me anguish when his eyelids did not close
To bid farewell, nor his mouth speak.

38. Spasms drew his lips inward
With gaping cracks whenever they twitched.

39. Seeing him dead redoubled my grief -
The branches dripped from it in misery.

40. Death certainly left some of his beauty behind
Like embroidery in creation.

41. I do not say medicine was wrong, but
Destiny simply differed in his case.

42. None can alter what my Lord created -
The devil lied while God spoke the truth.

43. God's will is done, praise be to Him!
He took back the blessing that He had given.

44. I face the days with acceptance, not anger,
Regardless of the good or ill they bring.

45. If God caused his death, He could have cured him,
So I submit to God, though He could have spared him.

46. The most precious soul was stolen from me,
A white pearl sculpted from a clot.

47. I had hoped he would be a successor after me
When death would come knocking.

48. O my slain one whose blood was shed
Before maturity - it was not rightfully spilled!

49. My sins have delayed me from following him,
And he has departed to eternity before me.

50. I wonder - will we meet again
In the gardens of eternity, or will we be apart?

51. One group has succeeded while another is doomed,
Cursed if the servant disobeys.

52. While another group's fate is postponed -
Suspended between safety and separation.

53. I betrayed my Master and did not advise him sincerely -
If the servant strives to advise, he will be set free.

54. O you who resembled and looked like my father -
You were righteous to me while others were wicked.

55. You were a good branch - if only
You had surpassed ten years of age by two more.

56. You, servant of the Almighty, my son, perhaps
You were wise like me but did not live long enough.

57. And you escaped this world wherein
Misfortune piles upon misfortune.

58. How are you now, O branch of delight, O full moon of dusk?
Did they welcome you when the shroud was removed?

59. Did you respond firmly when questioned by them,
Saying: “I testify God is true.”

60. “And my Prophet Ahmad whom He sent
With guidance - so He chose him over all people.

61. My Imam is the Honorable House, and the Kaaba is
My direction of worship, the bond of faith.”

62. If your father the scholar intercedes for you,
God will forgive his sins, so intercede!

63. May God cool my heart whenever
It burns from remembering you.

64. And may His mercy water your grave
As much as the leaves have dripped upon the grass.

65. My bereavement has burnt my eyelids with weeping -
When will patience mend what has torn?

66. I hid my love at first, so it was hidden,
Then I tried to calm my heart, but it fluttered!

67. Ask the doves of Ik - do I weep for a fever?
And the lightning of caves - do I weep for its flashes?

68. I only weep for a great calamity
That has surpassed all calamities in my view.

69. For if not for grieving my son, I could endure
Every burden that cannot be endured.

70. If you could see the clouds when they have favored me
With weeping at the time of sunset...

71. One passed away young like him - no sins were decreed,
So he escaped wrongdoings and uncertainties.

72. He succeeded, having died young before
Being called corrupt or deviant.

73. But woe to an elderly man or youth
If he desires adultery or tells lies!

74. He took the easy path while we took the harder one,
So he finished first while we lagged behind.

75. I will soon follow you, O servant of the Almighty,
And join you tomorrow in the afterlife!

76. It pains me to pass by a grave containing you -
If only my side could touch your side!

77. May God gladden the heart of one aggrieved, if
His sin has caused him misery on the most wretched day.
