1. A mother gave birth to you at dawn,
While the sly fox was still asleep.

2. The tall palms swayed, and the fruit bent down;
Most laden branches will always droop lowest.

3. Were it not for fear of my Lord,
I would have sent the vultures to tear at corpses.

4. She cried out against your refusal,
Though slackness was her way.

5. Silent was she, no thought of breakfast
Till it seemed sloth was her purpose.

6. My heart fluttered at the sound of pearls
And she said, “Here lie the grazing grounds.”

7. Young in years, but great in worth,
You became complete, flawless.

8. You came to God in purity,
Safe from all wrong. Well done! Your salvation awaits.

9. None could protect you except from death,
And for that, there is no escape.

10. Her claws caught you against my will;
The lioness claims her prey.

11. Fate's bow struck you down with an arrow.
Without you here, grief is my comfort.

12. God granted me patience. I persevered
Until the caravan and guide wept with me.

13. Jealousy poured slander over you
But slander is not solid like lead.

14. For you the prize is guaranteed. Let me care not
Before your Lord comes fair retribution.

15. The rainwaters have sweetened your resting place
Where the meadows and farmlands are watered.
