1. O night of passion, when will dawn break
The time of reunion is its tryst

2. The sleepless lover tossed and turned
Grief of separation repeats in him

3. The stars wept for him and blinked
For what he feels and awaits

4. Obsessed with a graceful gazelle
Fearing spies disturb its rest

5. My eyes laid traps to capture it
In dreams, yet failed in the hunt

6. How strange that I, the hunted one
Am taken by the hunter's snare

7. An idol of beauty standing tall
I love it though I don't worship

8. A sip of wine wets its lips
Drunk eyes in merriment dance

9. A sword slides from its eyelids
As if sleep tries to sheathe it

10. It spills the blood of lovers thus
Woe to those who emulate it

11. No blame on he who kills with his eyes
Yet spares with his hands their blood

12. O you who denied my blood with your eyes
Yet it stains your cheeks crimson

13. Your cheeks admit to my blood
Why then do your lids reject it

14. I seek to protect you from killing me
Though I think you do not intend it

15. For God's sake smile at an ardent lover
Perhaps your apparition will please him

16. What harm if you relieve the woe
Of one who draws near and distances

17. No life remains in his passion for you
Let his habituated self weep for it

18. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
Is there any hope left he can rely on

19. O people of longing we have a dawn
Flooding with tears to quench thirst

20. The longing one desires your company
Yet fate's circumstances prohibit it

21. How sweet is union and blissful
If not for time ruining its joy

22. With separation and estrangement, alas
My heart, how can you endure them

23. Love is most gentle to its subjects
Unlike others corrupting its conduct

24. Like time, the gentlest of its sons is
Father Abdurrahman Muhammad

25. Chaste and pure his integrity
Noble and virtuous his birth

26. His mediation advanced lineage
And his merit transcended peers

27. He attained lofty noble merits
Above the chariots he erects

28. A youth, Isaac, bequeathed him
Glory and praise inherited

29. He continues touring through epochs
Solving affairs and untying knots

30. Until his leadership endowed him
His policy and his purposefulness

31. Today he is the Supreme King
Master of those he desires to lead

32. Auspicious, blessed his age
Supported in rule, victorious

33. Gentle and easygoing his dignity
Yet firm and strict in times of war

34. He folds and unfurls the days
Sets up and topples the ages

35. His virtues shine like the sun
Foe and friend alike acknowledge

36. Songbirds' trills disturb him not
Though the flute plays its melody

37. Wine is not for him, nor the games
Of devil, its troublemaker

38. He abandoned lusts, his ambition
Knowledge quenching and supporting him

39. Some worldly rule still appeals to him
While asceticism for wealth tempts him

40. A fiery intelligence blazing bright
Dispelling shadows of doubts

41. Guidance towards good he seeks
And piety to make rule ascetic

42. Of refined manners that softened
Exposing those who seek him

43. No excuse for a praiser who does not
Gush with unique phrases his trove

44. The long flow of verse his ode
His grammar precise and eloquent

45. The master of Arabic lexicons dictating
Book of 'Ayn, reciting its lines

46. When I spoke to him and he responded
His erudition was clear to me

47. So from the edge of the path I descended
And said: “I am held by your rein”

48. If knowledge or generosity lack
I know you will summon their call

49. Who berates fate but visits you
O king of the world will praise it

50. If he strays your view guides him
Or he weakens your army backs him

51. Or he seeks his wish thirstily
Your basin of water provides him

52. You are the world and our faith
Generous one, unique of this age

53. If a rock is watered by your palm’s dew
It will shed its barrenness and bloom

54. The Black Stone, if you touch it
Will blanch by your palm’s stroke

55. Envoys travel vast distances to you
Sleepless nights their camel litters trot

56. The hardship of crossing the Najd desert
Fades by talk of you, their ardour unrotten

57. The East intimates your grace to its informant and helper, praising you
The eye sees you and is cured

58. Of its soreness and sleeplessness
The East's days are blessed since only

59. In you lies their greatest fortune
The truth shone on its pulpits

60. When its platforms hosted you
With justice you ended its oppressions

61. With wisdom you guided its course
You brought it scholars, leaving no

62. Science for it to seek and add
You sowed goodness it will reap

63. What is stored for it with God
Its platforms shook at your name

64. Let he who climbs them invoke it
The Sheikh was a generous brother

65. Quenching those who came to him
He passed away but you remained

66. To replace him, missed by all
So may God protect you from evil

67. And envelope you in His mercy
My life’s bliss and wealth’s joy

68. Are gone, as are their rhythms
Will your lover enter a gathering

69. And be asked: “Is this his mosque?”
No rug for me but deprivation

70. Perhaps your gifts will pave its floor
Send this prayer rug weaver gifts

71. To adorn his lines in the row
When you grant him gifts may you not

72. Deprive his giver, include them both
A home needs two to be covered

73. Not dressed by one exposed and bare
Join me with both, let me gain your thanks

74. My praises of you will be lifelong
Are you angry at the lies they claim?

75. The foam rises from your sea
Your sword's blade exposed

76. Your voice thunderous and loud
Does the wind blow except by consent

77. To strengthen and elevate it
You are the Master, I your slave

78. With which threats do you threaten me
I have no sin deserving punishment

79. The lying informer’s hands perish
If I deserved sanction, your habit

80. Of grace would melt anger and banish it
Things displeasing you occurred

81. That anger save you and numb you
God decided that, I do not

82. Enumerate them to accuse you
Do not confront me with unproven crimes

83. No witnesses confirmed for you
The vizier of the age and your scribe

84. Dispatching and receiving from you
Will also articulate what I said

85. And surely he will refute it
If I insulted you, my mouth sinned

86. And blasphemed the God I worship
Far from my manners and noble lineage

87. To insult a generous one I praise
Your generosity will pardon your slave

88. Melting anger and expelling it
And old affection you will recall

89. Renewing and reaffirming it
Does not your past pride remind you of me

90. And your stature eulogize me?
You married the sun, may your progeny thrive

91. Submit to the faith facilitating it
And shatter the fabric of blasphemy

92. Welcome a meadow perfumed with words
Like glistening pearls its necklaces knit

93. If Jamil had composed it
For the living, it would melt their minds

94. I presented poetry though tired
Your birth anniversary near

95. How generous is my poetry in rapture
And poetry is little that's well crafted

96. Without you its nonsense equals
The bank's exchange and fraudulence

97. Poetry is lost to the literary man
Or spent by whom coins it

98. It is on you peace of God when
The minstrels sing your melody
