1. Destiny has descended, so who can repel it,
And protect from the schemes of death and prevent it?

2. If it were possible to ward off misfortune,
You alone would have warded off what we dread and fear.

3. Death is the fate of mankind, not everlasting,
Neither for one resigned nor one distressed.

4. But the fall of eagles when they plunge down,
Is most painful and impactful to souls and alarming.

5. And raging storms, violent and fearful,
Either demolish firmly rooted structures or tear them out.

6. Or a day when suns are swept away and disappear,
And the stars are dragged by their forelocks and uprooted.

7. O morning whose dawn yesterday rose, but
I hid you in the darkness from my tearful eyes.

8. I recognized who extinguished your tomorrow, would that the one
Who extinguished were gone, and your veiled face.

9. For counsel, opinion and advice
More knowing and familiar than our beloved and trusted.

10. O sheikh, though not beyond youth’s realm,
The smooth-cheeked youth weep for you.

11. What use was your high station, as a refuge
And protected, with neighbors defending you?

12. And people around you, loyal in their love,
Hoping in you, polite, dust-sprinkled, pretentious.

13. They weep profusely while I weep bitterly,
They dab their eyes while mine weep copiously for you.

14. Nobly you reached the highest generosity in youth,
And gathered whatever you wished that none can gather.

15. Lineage atop the mountaintops, its pillows,
And earnings from every collected virtue.

16. What use, but that you lie prostrate
Between ribs though your burial hurt.

17. Sleep, for if praised traits perish, they
Remain and rise like glorious deeds.
