I think that if ruin understood him

إني أظن البلي لو كان يفهمه

1. I think that if ruin understood him
Ruin would have spared the remains of his beautiful face

١. إِنّي أَظُنُّ البِليَ لَو كانَ يَفهَمُهُ
صَدَّ البِلى عَن بَقايا وَجهِهِ الحَسَنِ

2. O his death! You left no elegance or refinement
That you did not decree to the grave and shroud

٢. يا مَوتَهُ لَم تَدَع ظَرفاً وَلا أَدَباً
إِلّا حَكَمتَ بِهِ لِلَّحدِ وَالكَفَنِ

3. His glances belong to God and death shatters them
As if his eyelids were drunk with intimacy

٣. لِلَّهِ أَلحاظُهُ وَالمَوتُ يَكسِرُها
كَأَنَّ أَجفانَهُ سَكرى مِنَ الوَسَنِ

4. It makes him reluctantly exhale his breath
The hand of death fondles it like the breeze does a branch

٤. يَرُدُّ أَنفاسَهُ كَرهاً وَتَعطِفُها
يَدُ المَنِيَّةِ عَطفَ الريحِ لِلغُصُنِ

5. O what horror my eyes have seen and my ears heard
So there remained neither my eyes nor my ears

٥. يا هَولَ ما أَبصَرَت عَيني وَما سَمِعَت
أُذني فَلا بَقِيَت عَيني وَلا أُذُني

6. No part of my body remained that I knew
Except that a part of grief had dissolved it

٦. لَم يَبقَ مِن بَدَني جُزءٌ عَلِمتُ بِهِ
إِلّا وَقَد حَلَّهُ جُزءٌ مِنَ الحَزَنِ

7. Joining him was more fitting and better for me
Than to live with a languid soul and body

٧. كانَ اللَحاقُ بِهِ أَولى وَأَحسَنَ بي
مِن أَن أَعيشَ سَقيمَ الروحِ وَالبَدَنِ
