شجا في الحشى ترداده ليس يفتر

1. A yearning in my heart that does not cease
It blunts my hopes, though fasting I release

١. شَجاً في الحَشى تَردادُهُ لَيسَ يَفتُرُ
بِهِ صُمنَ آمالي وَإِنّي لَمُفطِرُ

2. I swore by the brightness of wishes
A palm-cloud rains down desires released

٢. حَلَفتُ بِمُستَنِّ المُنى تَستَرِشُّهُ
سَحابَةُ كَفٍّ بِالرَغائِبِ تُمطِرُ

3. When youthfulness in it flowed, it waved to her
And for her company Abu Fadl Ja'far stood

٣. إِذا دَرَجَت فيهِ الصَبا كَفكَفَت لَها
وَقامَ لُباريها أَبو الفَضلِ جَعفَرُ

4. With a sword that from its sheath of water seems
And valleys where the dew of stars is wrung

٤. بِسَيبٍ كَأَنَّ السَيفَ مِن ثَرِّ نُؤيِهِ
وَأَندِيَةٍ مِنها نَدى النَوءِ يُعصَرُ

5. The days of Majid did adorn the world
Through him the rule is graced and boasts are flung

٥. لَقَد زينَتِ الدُنيا بِأَيّامِ ماجِدٍ
بِهِ المُلكُ يَبهى وَالمَفاخِرُ تَفخَرُ

6. A youth whose might makes troubles laugh and flee
In his saddle, a full moon and roaring lion sprung

٦. فَتىً مِن يَدَيهِ البَأسُ يَضحَكُ وَالنَدى
وَفي سَرجِهِ بَدرٌ وَلَيثٌ غَضَنفَرُ

7. For him hopes flocking to their goal aligned
And gathered by him thankful and bejeweled thronged

٧. بِهِ اِئتَلَفَت آمالُ وافِدَةِ المُنى
وَقامَت لَدَيهِ جَمَّةً تَتَشَكَّرُ

8. Abu Fadl, when I came to you with praise
I saw the faces of success and bounty flowered

٨. أَبا الفَضلِ إِنّي يَومَ جِئتُكَ مادِحاً
رَأَيتُ وُجوهَ الجودِ وَالنُجحِ تَزهَرُ

9. And knew I was a diver in an abundant sea
Where generosity's waves foam and surge

٩. وَأَيقَنتُ أَنّي فالِجٌ غَمرَ زاخِرِ
تَثوبُ إِلَيهِ بِالسَماحَةِ اَبحُرُ

10. Naught is surer than my hopes of your nobility
Naught lasts longer than a poetry emblazoned

١٠. فَلا شَيءَ أَمضى مِن رَجائِكَ في النَدى
وَلا شَيءَ أَبقى مِن ثَناءٍ يُحَبَّرُ

11. No aid of swords succeeds a poem's victory
That at the caliphs' doors esteemed attendance has

١١. وَما تَنصُرُ الأَسيافُ نَصرَ مَديحَةٍ
لَها عِندَ أَبوابِ الخَلائِفِ مَحضَرُ

12. When the villain turns his ear from it unhearing
It finds welcome audience with the noble and the just

١٢. إِذا ما اِنطَوى عَنها اللَئيمُ بِسَمعِهِ
يَكونُ لَها عِندَ الأَكارِمِ مُنشَرُ

13. At the kings' courts it has unsilenced drums
That of glory sing and are not stilled or oppressed

١٣. لَها بَينَ أَبوابِ المُلوكِ مَزامِرٌ
مِنَ الذِكرِ لَم تُنفَخ وَلا تُتَزَمَّرُ

14. His hands grasped might and bounty and nobility
And gained distinction when ignorance wandered lost

١٤. حَوَت راحَتاهُ الباسَ وَالجودَ وَالنَدى
وَنالَ الحِجا فَالجَهلُ حَيرانُ أَزوَرُ

15. So one who rules his own affairs does not neglect
To lead in generosity and defer what he has tossed

١٥. فَلا يَدَعُ الإِنجازَ يَملِكُ أَمرَهُ
وَيَقدُمُهُ في الجودِ مَطلٌ مُؤَخَّرُ

16. To you, untouched, brought as if a bride bedecked
In fractured jewelry and wedding garb embossed

١٦. إِلَيكَ بِها عَذراءَ زُفَّت كَأَنَّها
عَروسٌ عَلَيها حَليُها يَتَكَسَّرُ

17. She's brought to you O Banu Nasr as if
The bride of Chosroes when Caesar gave him host

١٧. تُزَفُّ إِلَيكُم يا بنَ نَصرٍ كَأَنَّها
حَليلَةُ كِسرى يَومَ آواهُ قَيصَرُ

18. Abu Fadl, poetry is such that refusal
Lets it die, while glory lives on and is engrossed

١٨. أَبا الفَضلِ إِنَّ الشِعرَ مِمّا يُميتُهُ
إِباءُ الفَتى وَالمَجدُ يَحيا وَيُقبَرُ
