1. Abu Sa'id though I'm no slanderer accused,
With praise or thanks or self-esteem reduced.

2. If I deny the good you have displayed,
In baseness I than you are more arrayed.

3. Your smiling face I can't forget, though dim
The morn's first smile in darkness breaking grim.

4. Just so your tears, if human, smile-bedight,
Ne'er other look but smiling gave the sight.

5. You gave my face its sheen again that day,
As burnished steel regains its shine, they say.

6. Good speech is truth; the best whate'er betide;
You spilled my face's water or my blood.
