1. O God, after Khālid I remain Khālid,
And people whose lamp of glory is the star of praise,

2. And Eth'i'yah of the Arabs has been watered,
With which cloven mountains between barren rocks were split,

3. Alas! Tears of a helper against sorrow,
Alas! Free poetry in chains assisting me,

4. So the eyes will not be generous unless they forgive,
Nor will the poetry's branches thrive unless they help.

5. Let the rhymes weep their sorrows after Khālid
Weeping misguiding archers on the watch,

6. Their adornments, if displayed,
To Khālid would be like adorned maidens,

7. And to his wild game heart would be their sweetness
Not like the sweetness of tame beasts in preserves,

8. And he would see the poison of words as though
It were sometimes mixed with the poison of asps,

9. The shade of convention in every town has shrunk,
And in the world the lamp of poems is extinguished,

10. So, O frequently traveling camel heading his way,
And O shy new arrival traveling to him,

11. And O glorious one fulfilled by death his vow,
So every glorious one was awed,

12. Tomorrow, after you, kindness will be prevented from flowing
And pouring will betray the miserly palms,

13. And O censured fancied thunder hearing
The lies of rumbling clouds in the rumblers,

14. Stay then, unload your saddlebags and supplies,
The destination has passed away after Khālid,

15. The earth's expanse recoiled the day
The towering mountains under it shook and trembled,

16. So the mouth has a somber hue after a charming
Refined appearance, with spittle not stagnant.

17. O year of calamities, you would have departed
After the people of hopes called you the year of gains,

18. Time mauled the tribes with its iron fangs
After him, dripping intractable poison,

19. Inflicting barren hardship on K̲h̲aṭṭān's house,
While Nizar stooped, deprived of livelihood, meanly denying,

20. By my life! Whose death brought glory?
And which palm abandoned us and helper?

21. As if we lost a thousand thousand armored heroes
Against a thousand thousand honorable, unseparating,

22. So O new loneliness of the world, yet it was intimate,
And O solitude of those in it with one death!

23. The arrogance of steeds has passed away and fate has turned
Taking the selves of a Maʿaddite and begetter,

24. Where is the healing of the mouths? Where is the brave,
When destruction threatens a kingdom fallen to vice?

25. And who will prevent the tyrant if there is no master
To shield the skins of men unless he struggles mightily?

26. And who will make the Sultan his pulses' bond
And who will string the members like necklaces?

27. And who did not cease to bury his sword
In the blood of an obstinate lion with each breath?

28. By my life - the one whom Rabiʿah outlined his tomb,
Though fate convulsed ceaselessly without abating,

29. Whom Bakr ibn Wāʾil's alive tribe established
A copious verdant grove of bliss after the trysts.

30. What virtues are in his shrouds, fairest traits,
Wellsprings of numbers, strange arrivals?

31. Dispositions that were like citadels time had breached
And over them he stood like an ever-struggling holy warrior,

32. So how precious is that dust to me and my comrades
And people, an aromatic lineage, generations prospering!

33. Neither that crescent rises bringing us good fortune,
Nor those clouds return with rainfall,

34. Neither my ancestors nor a conquering ancestor,
Nor ancestry on a day it climbed sublime,

35. But gray hairs whose fire distress spread among us
So none will lament save to the unresponsive,

36. If a friend or companion's eyes redden with tears,
They will shake a foe or envier's pillar, too,

37. If they brought relatives some consolation,
They poured dust on the cheeks of distant strangers!

38. For neither worldly aspects are smooth, nor is morning
Clear, nor is the water of life cold,

39. Yes, by my father, that prince Muḥammad
Is the axis of affairs, the lantern of these sights!

40. I praise the nights as they protect our herd with him,
And without that I would not praise them,

41. With him a guide from Yazīd and Khālid,
And two brilliances shone from Nijār and witness,

42. Among the generous this horse – and generosity
Would only adorn it with the gallantry of warriors -

43. War's brother who clothes it entirely as though
Its bodies were from him like corpses,

44. When it flared up it toppled all who stood
And those sitting rose for it in fear,

45. So say to the Kings of Sisijan and whoever marched
Against Arrān or Jurjān without requesting truce:

46. Beware! Cast off the citadels’ chains – and can it
Havediadems that its people would cast diadems?

47. And let not the devil of war deceive you, for he
Alongside the sword bleeds, his blade unrestrained,

48. Nor let your necks separate, for around them
Is a Nadjdite who will gather the scattered threads.

49. And never in a city did frequenting the goblet
Uproot except plucking heads seeking goblets,
