عفت أربع الحلات للأربع الملد

1. Four virtues adorn the four steadfast ones,
Each a fine-hewed pillar, straight and true.

١. عَفَت أَربُعُ الحِلّاتِ لِلأَربُعِ المُلدِ
لِكُلِّ هَضيمِ الكَشحِ مَجدولَةِ القَدِّ

2. Salma of Sulaiman, Amrah of Amir,
Hind of Bani Hind, and Su’da of Bani Sa’d.

٢. لِسَلمى سَلامانٍ وَعَمرَةِ عامِرٍ
وَهِندِ بَني هِندٍ وَسُعدى بَني سَعدِ

3. Homes where eyes once miserly now weep,
Where grief now presses each barren waste.

٣. دِيارٌ هَراقَت كُلَّ عَينٍ شَحيحَةٍ
وَأَوطَأَتِ الأَحزانَ كُلَّ حَشاً صَلدِ

4. Askwered are the breasts of generous men,
By that easy hill, that solitary flag.

٤. فَعوجا صُدورَ الأَرحَبِيِّ وَأَسهِلا
بِذاكَ الكَثيبِ السَهلِ وَالعَلَمِ الفَردِ

5. Do not ask me of a love whose taste is woe,
For none may know such love but the distraught.

٥. وَلا تَسأَلاني عَن هَوىً قَد طَعِمتُما
جَواهُ فَلَيسَ الوَجدُ إِلّا مِنَ الوَجدِ

6. I make my way to Jurash's tribe, astride
A racing camel, swift yet dignified.

٦. حَطَطتُ إِلى أَرضِ الجُدَيدِيِّ أَرحُلي
بِمَهرِيَّةٍ تَنباعُ في السَيرِ أَو تَخدي

7. Before me ride the lances of Hafs,
Men of war, their origin unknown, their fame denied.

٧. تَؤُمُّ شِهابَ الحَربِ حَفصاً وَرَهطُهُ
بَنو الحَربِ لا يَنبو ثَراهُم وَلا يُكدي

8. Who doubts their noble deeds, their courage bold?
Who questions that eloquence dwells in Nejd?

٨. وَمَن شَكَّ أَنَّ الجودَ وَالبَأسَ فيهِمُ
كَمَن شَكَّ في أَنَّ الفَصاحَةَ في نَجدِ

9. To their courts I guide my mount's slowed pace,
Their guest am I, and freely they provide.

٩. أَنَختُ إِلى ساحاتِهِم وَجَنابِهِم
رِكابي وَأَضحى في دِيارِهِم وَفدي

10. To Hafs' sword, still sheathed yet poised to strike,
A thousand blades stand ready at his side.

١٠. إِلى سَيفِهِم حَفصٍ وَمازالَ يُنتَضى
لَهُم مِثلُ ذاكَ السَيفِ مِن تِلكَ الغِمدِ

11. No door has scorned me, no hound given alarm,
No need for intercession from those far and wide.

١١. فَلَم أَغشَ باباً أَنكَرَتني كِلابُهُ
وَلَم أَتَشَبَّث بِالوَسيلَةِ مِن بُعدِ

12. No shameful begging do I do,
No thought unnerves me, no rebuff wounds my pride.

١٢. فَأَصبَحتُ لا ذُلُّ السُؤالِ أَصابَني
وَلا قَدَحَت في خاطِري رَوعَةُ الرَدِّ

13. To him a promise made yet unfulfilled
Is deepest shame, should gifts not swift precede

١٣. يَرى الوَعدَ أَخزى العارِ إِن هُوَ لَم تَكُن
مَواهِبُهُ تَأتي مُقَدَّمَةَ الوَعدِ

14. His clouds would rain, though lightning's flash nowhere,
His liberal hand would sow though thunder left its seat.

١٤. فَلَو كانَ ما يُعطيهِ غَيثاً لَأَمطَرَت
سَحائِبُهُ مِن غَيرِ بَرقٍ وَلا رَعدِ

15. A herd of steeds, their hooves still red from war,
Their claws like lions rending wounded prey.

١٥. دَرِيَّةُ خَيلٍ ما يَزالُ لَدى الوَغى
لَهُ مِخلَبٌ وَردٌ مِنَ الأَسَدِ الوَردِ

16. Among them Ja’ad, face and garment white as dew,
Yet no coward to be scared by lions at play.

١٦. مِنَ القَومِ جَعدٌ أَبيَضُ الوَجهِ وَالنَدى
وَلَيسَ بَنانٌ يُجتَدى مِنهُ بِالجَعدِ

17. While Khorasan festers, ulcerous with revolt,
Its limbs decaying, a mangy hide its robe

١٧. وَأَنتَ وَقَد مَجَّت خُراسانُ داءَها
وَقَد نَغِلَت أَطرافُها نَغَلَ الجِلدِ

18. Its rabble bare their throats to Arabia's wolves
That freemen not be sold in slaves' cheap road.

١٨. وَأَوباشُها خُزرٌ إِلى العَرَبِ الأُلى
لِكَيما يَكونَ الحُرُّ مِن خَوَلِ العَبدِ

19. Nights when glory slept in unrightful bed
And fools like giants held the age's reins

١٩. لَيالِيَ باتَ العِزُّ في غَيرِ بَيتِهِ
وَعُظِّمَ وَغدُ القَومِ في الزَمَنِ الوَغدِ

20. Not in error did they drag honor through mire
But knowingly they sought to slit Faith's veins

٢٠. وَما قَصَدوا إِذ يَسحَبونَ عَلى المُنى
بُرودَهُمُ إِلّا إِلى وارِثِ البُردِ

21. Their swords were poison and their arrows death
Far sweeter than honeyed wine thy vengeance instead

٢١. وَراموا دَمَ الإِسلامِ لا مِن جَهالَةٍ
وَلا خَطَإٍ بَل حاوَلوهُ عَلى عَمدِ

22. You bound in one all Qahtan's seed, Adnan's line
And none a seam could find where two were wed

٢٢. فَمَجّوا بِهِ سَمّاً وَصاباً وَلَو نَأَت
سُيوفُكَ عَنهُم كانَ أَحلى مِنَ الشَهدِ

23. Through you the tribes were joined by love's own thread
As perfect as a necklace, pearls inset

٢٣. ضَمَمتَ إِلى قَحطانَ عَدنانَ كُلَّها
وَلَم يَجِدوا إِذ ذاكَ مِن ذاكَ مِن بُدِّ

24. Among Tamim you were Ahnaf, noble soul
And champion of Azd's honored ranks

٢٤. فَأَضحَت بِكَ الأَحياءُ أَجمَعُ أُلفَةً
كَما أُحكِمَت في النَظمِ واسِطَةُ العِقدِ

25. Father you were to Judham's mighty kings
When oaths were sworn and ties of kinship knit

٢٥. وَكُنتَ هُناكَ الأَحنَفَ الطِبَّ في بَني
تَميمٍ جَميعاً وَالمُهَلَّبَ في الأَزدِ

26. Though darkness reigned, still your star blazed ahead
Bright guide and harbinger of fortune's winds

٢٦. وَكُنتَ أَبا غَسّانَ مالِكَ وائِلٍ
عَشِيَّةَ دانى حَلفَهُ الحِلفُ بِالعَقدِ

27. Does not the lion lead the wedding feast?
Pride of place is his when all lions meet

٢٧. وَلَمّا أَماتَت أَنجُمُ العَرَبِ الدُجى
سَرَت وَهيَ أَتباعٌ لِكَوكَبِكَ السَعدِ

28. Nearby they wait, your army poised to march
Secure within your favor, by your wisdom led

٢٨. وَهَل أَسَدُ العِرّيسِ إِلّا الَّذي لَهُ
فَضيلَتُهُ في حَيثُ مُجتَمَعُ الأُسدِ

29. Jaifakh's weak spirit strengthened against fate
While proud Nejd in direst need your valor fed

٢٩. فَهُم مِنكَ في جَيشٍ قَريبٍ قُدومُهُ
عَلَيهِمُ وَهُم مِن يُمنِ رَأيِكَ في جُندِ

30. You viewed men's wars as but a childish game
Though lofty their tales and earnest their creed

٣٠. وَوَقَّرتَ يافوخَ الجَبانِ عَلى الرَدى
وَزِدتَ غَداةَ الرَوعِ في نَجدَةِ النَجدِ

31. Sweet balm, those battles you began!
Cool comfort for fevered minds their memory

٣١. رَأَيتَ حُروبَ الناسِ هَزلاً وَإِن عَلا
سَناها وَتِلكَ الحَربُ مُعتَمَدُ الجِدِّ

32. You raised high the eye downcast in defeat
And planted glory where once shame held the field

٣٢. فَيا طيبَ مَجناها وَيا بَردَ وَقعِها
عَلى الكَبِدِ الحَرّى وَزادَ عَلى البَردِ

33. A man whose soul and deeds are storms unleashed
Though him they weary, he shall not concede

٣٣. وَرَفَّعتَ طَرفاً كانَ لَولاكَ خاشِعاً
وَأَورَدتَ ذَودَ العِزِّ في أَوَّلِ الوِردِ

34. We're bound by blood, by worldly chains
Needless for us affection's seeds to sow

٣٤. فَتىً بَرَّحَت هِمّاتُهُ وَفِعالُهُ
بِهِ فَهوَ في جُهدٍ وَما هُوَ في جَهدِ

35. He saw your fathers treat his sires as kin
Those ties demand he shelter you, their heirs in woe

٣٥. مَتَتُّ إِلَيهِ بِالقَرابَةِ بَينَنا
وَبِالرَحِمِ الدُنيا فَأَغنَت عَنِ الوُدِّ

36. How fine your righteous way, while I'm alive
How sweet your words and thoughts, when I am dead

٣٦. رَأى سالِفَ الدُنيا وَشابِكَ آلِهِ
أَحَقَّ بِأَن يَرعاهُ في سالِفِ العَهدِ

37. I had no need of wealth your hands could give
Nor Hafs of my slim poetry's sparse thread

٣٧. فَيا حُسنَ ذاكَ البِرِّ إِذ أَنا حاضِرٌ
وَيا طيبَ ذاكَ القَولِ وَالذِكرِ مِن بَعدي

38. But kindness he saw like necklaces of pearls
And so for them a fitting bracelet forged instead

٣٨. وَما كُنتُ ذا فَقرٍ إِلى صُلبِ مالِهِ
وَما كانَ حَفصٌ بِالفَقيرِ إِلى حَمدي

39. I lost no bounty that was in his hands
Nor did he lack what poetry was mine to spread

٣٩. وَلَكِن رَأى شُكري قِلادَةَ سُؤدُدٍ
فَصاغَ لَها سِلكاً بَهِيّاً مِنَ الرِفدِ

40. How many hearts were softened by that praise
That brought green life to glory's barren bed!

٤٠. فَما فاتَني ما عِندَهُ مِن حِبائِهِ
وَلا فاتَهُ مِن فاخِرِ الشِعرِ ما عِندي

41. A garland of pure deeds I weave for him
With melodious verse that shall long outlast my breath

٤١. وَكَم مِن كَريمٍ قَد تَخَضَّرَ قَلبُهُ
بِذاكَ الثَناءِ الغَضِّ في طُرُقِ المَجدِ
