1. By Him who blessed the revered sanctuary
A group rides upon the days though riding them is difficult
١. أَما وَالَّذي غَشّى المُبارَكَ خِزيَةً
يُغَنّي عَلى الأَيّامِ رَكبٌ بِها رَكَبا
2. Alas! Muqiran remains fettered, reciting with his honor
The rhyming prose of poetry, which if examined, brings shame
٢. لَقَد ظَلَّ مُقرانٌ يَحُكُّ بِعِرضِهِ
قَوافِيَ شِعرٍ لَو تَدَبَّرَها جُربا
3. When she disobeys the one who desires her and travels to him
She obeys an angry man who angrily leads pilgrims on hajj
٣. إِذا ما عَصَت مَن رامَها وَسَما لَها
أَطاعَت فَتىً عَضباً يَسوسُ حِجاً عَضبا
4. He hoped his lowly status would deliver him
Yet he knew not that the lion preys upon the dog
٤. رَجا أَن يُنَجّيهِ خَساسَةُ قَدرِهِ
وَلَم يَدرِ أَنَّ اللَيثَ يَفتَرِسُ الكَلبا
5. O Muqiran, how many companions have you met at public gatherings
Bringing you glory while they suffered shame?
٥. أَمُقرانُ كَم قِرنٍ لَقيتَ بِمَشهَدٍ
فَكانَ بِهِ رَفعاً وَكُنتَ بِهِ نَصبا
6. When you approach him happy and joyous
As if you have seen rain after a drought
٦. تَراهُ إِذا ما جِئتَهُ مُتَهَلِّلاً
إِلَيكَ وَمَسروراً كَأَن قَد رَأى زُبّا
7. Rough are the ways of his thinking - if I reproached him
For what I see of him, he would not understand the rebuke
٧. غَليظٌ مَجاري فِكرِهِ لَو ضَرَبتُهُ
عَلى ما بَدا لي مِنهُ لَم يَفهَمِ الضَربا
8. When a man's face is stern, he will experience
Animosity, not amenable to gentleness while angry
٨. إِذا كانَ وَجهُ المَرءِ يَبساً فَإِنَّهُ
يُقاسي عِجاناً لا اِمتِراءَ بِهِ رَطبا
