1. I respond to your call, my homeland, having heard,
And though you command, you have commanded one obedient.

2. This is the motto of your children in you, all of them,
Whose meaning it spreads wherever a broadcaster settled.

3. Each separately repeats their words,
This they work on altogether.

4. Blessed are they, and they are more dutiful of mankind’s children,
To be reassured that their father is agreeable.

5. And I protect them from remembering you and not seeing
The apples of their eyes melting away in yearning.

6. Remembering you fills their mouths and hearts,
Not emptying for anything else as a subject.

7. It snatches rest from the side of the delicate,
And drags sleep from the eyelid of the wakeful.

8. Remembering you we avoided the life, and do not
Want to return to it in anything other than you.

9. Remembering you kindles yearning in the hearts,
And flames what is between the ribs - and what a flame!

10. Yearning and affection for you both
Stir in us with the sorrow - followed.

11. Yearning and affection for a sheikh in whom
We mean you, O mountain high and staunch.

12. Lebanon your mountain, a palace of glory raised,
Increasing despite your opponents, exalted.

13. And your children the guiding moons, wherever they appear,
The banner waits for their rising.

14. And we prefer dwelling in the most honored meadows of
The world, so in your protection we repose.

15. Lebanon who can I see to heal
A heart that the heat of affliction has inflamed?

16. Lebanon your love has prospered me, and made me
Happy in your absence, dispirited and discomposed.

17. I nursed it as a child, and have not yet ceased
To be in it, despite my gray hair, a suckling babe.

18. And I remain your lover for the length of my life,
Beauty - blessed is He who created it flawless!

19. Beauty I see it inherent in you, and in
Other than your essence, it is ornament manufactured.

20. And by feeling it I was stamped, so ask whoever
Knew it not, ask a stamped poet.

21. In other than Lebanon its spring
Passes with its autumn concatenated.

22. But in it is perpetual youth,
And its seasons forever remain spring.

23. O mountain that is pleased with steadfastness though fate decays,
And refuses in life to submit.

24. I look upon you, O Lebanon, from
The atmosphere of imagination, seeing and hearing.

25. So I see in you - what horrors
Cast upon the deaf rock splitting.

26. I find misery over the dwellings looming,
And despair in its yards sown.

27. And hardship enfeebles the strong, so the
Diseases decimate the weak violently.

28. And behind the disease hunger lurks in ambush, so whoever
Disease did not destroy, hunger kills.

29. Both are murders - woe is me for their
Murders, enumerating their number wearies.

30. This is some of what my eye sees, and all of it
Is the most dreadful that the dreadful sees.

31. Ascending from every crevasse, bearing
A complaint its echo returns reiterating.

32. The complaint of thousands has in you its wellspring - if
The rescuers do not aid swiftly.

33. A complaint that stirs sighs, groans, regrets and
Frightening - and torment.

34. Sighs of patients who suffer stingily, finding no
Cure to heal the wounded.

35. Groans of those who writhe, seeing not
To relieve what they complain of, saturated.

36. And the laments of mothers, increased by
The orphans and widows proliferation.

37. They weep for children, fathers, and
Husbands, and they copiously shed tears.

38. As for groaning, it seethes in your breast, O
Sheikh of meadows, and splits your ribs

39. Resenting those who troubled you, so constrained
A chest that had been capacious.

40. They broke covenants and bound you, nor heeded
The document of your independence by signing.

41. They reduced you - and it befits the darkness to
Reduce the lofty and raise up the lowly.

42. And to submit to them you were forced, while you chose not
Except to God alone to submit.

43. And upon your meadows and gardens they unleashed
Devastation, destruction, and ravaging.

44. The houses they emptied though they were homes,
And the gardens they spoiled though they were lush.

45. And they came with atrocities that horrify the
World for their horror, and the inanimate trembles terrified.

46. After all this, does life become easy for us,
While your heart brims over with agony?

47. Or do beds soften for us while we see you
To the ferocious vicissitudes recumbent?

48. No! The drink is not ever sweet for us,
And we refuse food - we do not hunger.

49. Except when the darkness over you disperses,
And you return after hopelessness limpid.

50. Then your children attain what they desire,
And they stem from their eyes the tears.

51. And they see the banner of your glory in you waving
As they were used to it before - lifted.

52. And God we call upon to be
Responding to this prayer of ours - Hearing.
