كأحقب موشي القوائم لاحه

Like a lame one with crooked legs he appeared

نفى الأسد حتى إنما ببلاده

The lion wandered far from his own land

سل أميري ما الذي غيره

Ask my prince what has changed him

أبا ضبيعة لا تعجل بسيئة

Abu Dhubai'ah, do not hastily judge

يكف لساني عامر وكأنما

My tongue is silenced, as if gagged and bound,

فدع عنك قوما قد كفوك شئونهم

Leave behind people whose affairs have wearied you,

رعى غير مذعور بهن وراقه

He herded them unafraid though they were plump,

أنتم منا ولكنكم

You are my people, but on the day of distress,

إن أذق حتفي فقلبي ذاقه

Though my fate takes a piece of me, my heart has tasted it

كم مسر لي حقدا قلبه

How many who bear malice towards me in their hearts

فلما التقينا وكان الجلاد

When we met, though whips did fall,

لقد زرقت عيناك يا بن مكعبر

Your eyes have truly shone, O progeny of flowing tears,

وما أنا إلا كالزمان إذا صحا

I am but like Time awake when it awakes,

من سره النيك بغير مال

Who finds pleasure without wealth

أنا جزرنا عن الكذاب هامته

I severed the liar's hopes after repeated stabs and blows that uncover veils,

أنا أبو سعد إذا الليل دجا

I am Abū Saʿd, when night falls

كأنه جيأل عرفاء عارضها

As though it were a brave mountain its heights towering,

جررت على راجي الهوادة منهم

I dragged to the one who hoped for peace among them

لعمرك ما سب الأمير عدوه

By your life! The enemy did not revile the prince.

والواردين إذا المياه تقسمت

When the waters are shared the she-camels are made to kneel,

نفرت سودة مني أن رأت

Sawdah turned away when she saw

عواصي إلا ما جعلت وراءها

Except for what I have left behind

فرشني بخير طالما قد بريتني

Spread me with goodness for as long as you have created me

أبى قلبه إلا عميرة إن دنت

His heart refused any but Umayrah though she drew near,

ذرني أشب همي براح فإنني

Let me quench my worries with solace, for I see

إني إذا ما الأمر بين شكه

When matters become clear, though doubts obscure,

يا ليت شعري متى تغدو مخيسة

بسطت رابعة الحبل لنا

لعمري لبئس الحي شيبان إن علا

أما خليلي أبو بحر فإن له

إن المساجد لاتباع وإنما

حشر الإله مع القرود محلما

ألا إن ليلى لا يرام حديثها
