يا صاح هذا العجب

1. O friend, such wonder this is
For everything has a cause

١. يا صاحِ هذا العَجَبُ
لِكُلِّ أَمرٍ سَبَبُ

2. The people of Suleima were angry
Why were they offended?

٢. أَهلُ سُلَيمى غَضِبُوا
فِيمَ تَراهُم عَتَبُوا

3. We brought them no displeasure
Nor did we backbite them

٣. لَم نَأتِ سُخطاً لَهُمُ
وَلا لَدَينا قُصِبُوا

4. They sent their messenger
Who searched and sought

٤. قَد بَعَثُوا رَسُولُهم
فَنَقَّبُوا وَطَلَبُوا

5. That they might find fault with us
And every land they struck

٥. كَي يَجِدُوا ذَنباً لَنا
وَكُلَّ أَرضٍ ضَرَبُوا

6. Neither non-Arabs are appeased
Nor in it are Arabs appeased

٦. ما تَسكُنُ العُجمُ وَما
تَسكُنُ فيهِ العَرَبُ

7. But rather my separation and remoteness
They brought near

٧. وَإِنَّما صرمي لِغَي
ظِي وَبُعادِي قَرَّبُوا

8. When they rode, as I see
The state in which they rode

٨. إِذ رَكِبُوا فيما أُرى
مِن حالِهِم ما رَكِبُوا

9. The slanderer did not stop with them
Lying until they were exhausted

٩. ما زالَ واشٍ مَعَهُم
يَكذِبُ حَتّى اِنشَعَبُوا

10. Ulayy who often lies
With ardor, love and lies

١٠. عُلَيُّ قَد يَشعَبُ ذا
الوَجدِ المُحِبِّ الكَذِبُ

11. Oh would that our people had taken
A path that they did not accompany

١١. يا لَيتَ أَهلِينا طَرِي
قاً لَم يَكُونوا اِصطَحَبُوا

12. When they left me anxious
My heart within me throbs

١٢. إِذ وَرَّثُوني كَمَداً
فَالقَلبُ مِنّي يَضرِبُ

13. Rather would that I knew, by the youth
In his time made uneasy

١٣. بَل لَيتَ شِعري وَالفَتى
لِحينِهِ مُجتَلَبُ

14. Can slackness kill a man?
His guide misguided, drunk

١٤. هَل يَقتُلُ المَرءَ رَخِي
مٌ دَلُّهُ مُختَضِبُ

15. Remote, frowning, eyes unveiled
By her no veils removed

١٥. رَحصٌ غَضِيضُ الطَرفِ لا
تُكشَفُ عَنهُ الحُجُبُ

16. Like a branch, above a
Thicket, peaks not concealed

١٦. كَالغُصنِ أَعلاهُ وَرا
بٍ ما تُوارى النُقُبُ

17. She turns the eyes of Ju'dhir
Who inclines toward her, fluttering

١٧. يُديرُ عَيني جُؤذَرٍ
يَحنُو عَلَيهِ رَبرَبُ

18. The neck of a tender gazelle, her neck
And from it the lips protrude

١٨. جِيدُ غَزالٍ جِيدُهُ
وَالثَغرُ مِنهُ أَشنَبُ

19. As though her saliva were
Musk, poured upon it

١٩. كَأَنَّما رِيقَتُهُ
مِسكٌ عَلَيهِ ضَرَبُ

20. Gray hair aged her, from a
Flask, pure, flowing water

٢٠. شِيبَ بِهِ مِن قُنَّةٍ
ماءٌ زلالٌ قَعِبُ

21. Asjar, who spent the night with
Clouds striking upon him

٢١. أَسجَرُ قَد باتَ عَلَي
هِ مِن سَحابٍ ضَرِبُ

22. The sun did not see him, nor
Did lichen cling to him

٢٢. لَم تَرَهُ الشَمسُ وَلَم
يَعتِك عَلَيهِ الطُحلَبُ

23. He has, along with the description
I described, a colored infusion

٢٣. لَهُ مَعَ النَعتِ الَّذي
أَنعَتُ لَونٌ مُشرَبُ

24. Like the pages of scripture
Upon which gold was made to flow

٢٤. كَوَرَقِ المَصحَفِ قَد
أُجرى عَلَيهِ الذَهَبُ
