When a man is deprived of modesty,

إذا حرم المرء الحياء فإنه

1. When a man is deprived of modesty,
He deserves every kind of ugliness.

١. إِذا حُرِمَ المَرءُ الحَياءَ فَإِنَّهُ
بِكُّلِ قَبِيحٍ كانَ مِنهُ جَديرُ

2. He has defects in everything, his secrets
Are licit, his impudence impudence and arrogance.

٢. لَهُ قِحَّةٌ في كُلِّ شَيءٍ وَسِرُّهُ
مُباحٌ وَخِدناهُ خَناً وَغُرُورُ

3. He sees insults as praise, and baseness as nobility,
And turns his ear away from good advice.

٣. يَرى الشَتمَ مَدحاً والدَناءَةَ رِفعَةً
وَلِلسَمعِ مِنهُ في العِظاتِ نُفُورُ

4. The face of modesty is covered with a delicate skin,
Everything that disgraces is hateful to it.

٤. وَوَجهُ الحَياءِ مُلبَسٌ جِلدَ رِقَّةٍ
بَغِيضٌ إِلَيهِ ما يَشِينُ كَثِيرُ

5. Reform yourself, O youth, as long as you live,
For you will attain the best states of one who repents.

٥. فَرَجِّ الفَتى ما دامَ يَحيا فَإِنَّهُ
إِلى خَير حالاتِ المُنيبِ يَصِيرُ
