1. What delights you of wealth you amass
Or what saddens you of it when you disperse it
١. ماذا يَسُرُّكَ مِن مالٍ تُجَمِّعُهُ
أَو ما يُغُمُّكَ مِنهُ إِذ تُفَرِّقُهُ
2. You had no wealth the day you earned it
But it was wealth for you the day you spent it
٢. وَلَم يَكُن لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تَكسُبُهُ
لَكِنَّهُ لَكَ مالٌ يَومَ تُنفِقُهُ
3. You love the life for it and inherit it
Yet life will fail you and fail it
٣. تُحِبُّ مِن أَجلِهِ الدُنيا وَتورِثُها
وَسَوفَ توبِقُكَ الدُنيا وَتوبِقُهُ
4. You concealed it from all people's eyes
Yet you know not that fate keeps an eye on it
٤. سَتَرتَهُ عَن عُيونِ الناسِ كُلِّهُمُ
وَلَستَ تَعلَمُ أَنَّ الدَهرَ يَرمُقُهُ
5. If you do not hasten to aid it in adversities
It will urgently overtake and exhaust it
٥. إِن لَم تُبَكِّر إِلَيهِ في نَوائِبِهِ
فَسَوفَ يَطرُقُهُ رَكضاً فَيُرهِقُهُ
