1. Each person in this world has an ambition to limit him,
And I am not one who sets limits on my ambitions.

2. I was granted a heart smoother than stone,
Ready for whatever my sword demands.

3. Except that the worry of misfortune occupies it greatly,
Those are the attributes of the heart of every protector.

4. And what protection can a man have to guard his honor,
If fear of doves overtakes him in the matter?

5. I armored myself with my resolve and my heart concealed its patience,
And my determination accompanied me like a quarrel.

6. By God’s name, I seek excellence;
Sometimes I find it behind me and sometimes before me.

7. And I do not hope to live forever;
This world is no abode of eternity.

8. I know whatever I gain safe today,
I will leave it in peace tomorrow.

9. But the hopes of great men are many,
If this world can be won by the great.
