1. My patience, which sees naught but disappointment,
And my consoling myself with false hopes,

2. I see all patience whose outcome is not blamed,
While my patience over Lamiya is of blameworthy consequence.

3. One may attain what he never aspired for,
While the sought may be far from every seeker.

4. That which makes death taste sweet to me
Is encountering enemies and avoiding loved ones.

5. And my staying among my people in humiliation,
For the young man is honored among his family and kin.

6. There is no good in those I visited and found them
Kinsmen except that they are like scorpions.

7. So I did not find them sympathizing during misfortune,
With fate and days save with reproaches.

8. A friend is not one who beholds you in luxury,
Rather one you meet during calamities.

9. I am determined to stay in the town
Where my friend dwells, though to me like a shunning foe.

10. May God fulfill my needs without their help
And remove me from this land and its mounts.

11. My wealth may be little, yet I meet
A man unblemished in lineage, branch and origin.

12. You who have ennobled the name of our house when it was forgotten
And made my status sublime and raised my side,

13. Warded off harms from me when the nights
In their circuits poured calamities.

14. You secured me days which were crafty,
For days have excuses for the penitent.

15. So, nothing of what I hoped for became loss
And none I hoped for were absent, but present.

16. As for you, O son of the most generous, who was my refuge,
In whom the world is not safe from wonders.

17. I found in you praise, gratitude and eulogy
For as long as I live which will not cease.

18. Know that the life of this world is but to gain praise,
So one who attains no praise profits nothing.

19. One who did not experience your generosity,
Even if he were to give freely like pouring rain,

20. And one who in valor is not like you,
Even if he plunged into fray like Law ibn Ghalib,

21. Among a people with bright, splendid faces,
Defending their accounts with firm-fanged beasts.

22. For them in battle plains clash lightnings,
And on days of munificence pour copious clouds.

23. Did you not deter the enemies that day you faced them
Among those regiments waving between lances and mounts

24. Brandishing at them between blades and forelocks
Like a full moon amid fixed stars?

25. And victory, dear to you, leads you over foes
And divine support accompanies you from all sides.

26. May God give you a neighbor till the end of glory,
And one who treaded the paths of loss without fearing.

27. The sword is yours on the day of horror, striking,
Separating locks from plaits and scalps.

28. You see atop its pommel the Franks are
Like necklaces of pearls atop a brandy bottle.

29. Every furbished blade you unsheathe
With which you parried the thrust of warriors.

30. Its teeth penetrate the gloom of battles
Like the cleavage of dawn rents veils of darkness.

31. And smooth-haired, which David fashioned
And clothed it while war's paths are steep.

32. It rivals, when it passes over it, the pond
If the zephyr's flags and clouds journey over it.

33. And steeds of pure breed whose origins
Lie in the seekers of glory and attained requests.

34. They surpass the glance's return in outpacing
As if lofty columns firmly fixed.

35. You see every dark-garmented is guided,
Lofty of form and stature, high of shoulder.

36. Bay as if the night cast its gown over it
Thus leaving one of its planets in it.

37. You have of the sublime every virtue
That bewilders the lords of reasoning and doctrine.

38. By my life, you have disclosed what was hidden
And elucidated the ways of high-aspiring truth.

39. You subjugated insurgent nights by force
And vanquished the howling of misfortunes.

40. Towards you, O Ibn Janbo Lado, have my
Emaciations and sorrows from afar yearned.

41. So take as a bride of your meanings an ornament
A virgin protected from every suitor's eye.

42. Recently weaned yet competing
What they previously carried in cases.

43. It is forever rain pouring to revive arid land
And succor to a wishful one and safety to a monk.

44. May time make you rise in station after station
And may your star in the horizon of sublimity never set!
