1. O brother of the eye that gazes upon beauty's charms
If only we could find loyalty that would bring us together

2. Add not to my tears of grief still more blood
The cruelty you've shown suffices me

3. Like a tender branch you turned not to my love complaint
Giving strength and solace to my yearning and my pain

4. Separation's hand tore from a loving heart of mine
That was once a part, now by your act, torn in twine

5. All night Yaheya like his lot spent with thee
The more he pined, the madder grew your disdain

6. We are the faithful lovers of your love while others
Torture like infidels true hearts they've slain

7. Can you not see us but as aliens to your land?
Our love led us astray; your love our guidance became

8. Or did your coyness make us doubt the swords that from your glances came
Till doubt in our hearts certainty did gain?

9. Our malady in love is anguish and lament
How can we cure the anguish or the cries of discontent?

10. We swooned from leanness but from the spying critic's eye
Our worn and pallid faces we tried hard to hide

11. Death we pray for to escape the cruel pangs of love
But what's the fate of one who prays for death's release?

12. Our only refuge from the battle of your eyes
Was in their peace and safety did our comfort lie

13. You thought the magic in the lovely maidens' eyes
Was like the deer accompanying the noble Hussain

14. The brave hero in the battle's rage and fight
Who deals his blows left and right in the fray's height

15. Of the curve-faced generous folk, when no rain comes
From clouds, he makes the water course flow again

16. Better to seek his aid in want and injury
In disasters, he's the guarantor, the champion

17. And when your Lord assists a servant thus
He is to all the worlds a pillar and a sign

18. His hands of bounty to mankind extend
Like the outpouring rains in copious showers descend

19. And so for his qualities much praise they rendered
As time's long ages their rhymes extolled and penned

20. Just ruler in his lands, strong wolf to feeble sheep
Yet to the wretched, he is sustenance and friend

21. None can attain dishonesty or wrong while in his reign
The bright and noble principles control ascend

22. Through him is safety and security, forgetting fear
The faithful and trustworthy overseer

23. Grandson of Alwan, unique since time began
In virtue, faith, to him goes fame and laud from men

24. From his forebears he inherited asceticism and every noble trait
Those grandsires who in wilderness found their abode

25. Merciful, with multiples of his own wealth
He feeds the needy and the hungry's wants bestowed

26. Indeed, Allah shows grace to those of worshippers
Who unto others mercy have liberally showed

27. The hearts of enviers boiled with pits of spite
And from their eyes tears flowed in rivers bright

28. No medicine of Galen can avail the envious cure
No code of law can halt their baneful blight

29. The worst diseases are those dwelling in the soul
And in the breast concealed from open sight

30. So God led his enemies astray in easy paths
Where they cannot be guided nor walk aright

31. They sought his glory, but it was too high to gain
So before him they had to bow in humble plight

32. Impossible! The tyrant wolf o'er gentle dogs prevail
Or fleeing serpents conquer dragons in their might

33. Before his judgments, ignorance was never known
His wisdom and his justice shine in fullest light

34. He brings good fortune to the miserable and guides
The ignorant, granting wellness to them all

35. Vanquishing enemies, fulfilling hopes and prayers
Answering pleas, rewarding expectations bright

36. In his glory, he is never miserly or mean
In wealth, he is never petty or uptight

37. He offered his pure self as ransom for the world
His lofty principles no assault can blight

38. How his strong will protected the helpless many times
From tyrants and oppressors and aggressors of their right

39. A lion in his lair, no other can compare
For lions to protect their lairs are filled with might

40. O son of one who gathered perfections first
And helped since he was in his mother's womb ensconced

41. For seeing you, what longing in my ribs consumes!
Naught but the fire and ache of love is left inside

42. You have stolen from me my reason until naught
But moaning comes from me, all power of speech denied

43. God brought me, praising, to you, with poetry
Composed and rhythmic, flowing like the tide

44. Ablaze to meet you, disheveled clothes reveal
A camel carrying heavy loads spread far and wide

45. It climbed the hill, you'd think its sturdy foot
Bore mountains up, so resolute its stride

46. My chest outdoes all chests with its firm uprightness
Like a tall, elegant palm, of brilliant countrywide

47. I clothed myself in red brocade, donning
A refined mantle of colorful countrywide

48. Best friend, worthy of the son of Hajar's coat of mail
Its strong links forged in Semaul's land supplied

49. Renewing my old covenant, for noble pacts
Are kept by generous folk whatever may betide

50. And repeating my affection lasting in all states
Once shared and never severed from your side

51. I swear upon my mount who bears us o'er the stretch
I'll give you every gift and all that can abide

52. Whenever their hot embers are stirred
And their heat intensifies, stoked fires inside

53. You'd think the family in the deserts are seas
And sand dunes lofty ships traversing the tide

54. And if you see them, lines written arcane
On the Brides' Temples, letters rich supplied

55. With secrets, graven on the edifice
Where every letter shaped like a Nun presides

56. No lies did I profess when I made visitation
Nor feigned affection while in friendship I reside

57. Our love is from an ancient lineage and to fathers
There is inheritance from which sons are supplied

58. I do not consider seemly she who is most fair
A face too perfect, needing no beautification

59. Or conceal, O my intimate friend
Fraud gilded over in presumed fortification

60. Or pockets that contain the spirits and scents
Of two abodes, perceiving what's inside

61. So live in peace, O Jamal, and your sons
And leave me a dwelling and fortress fortified
