1. My journey is in the wilderness and the night is dark,
And my strife is in tumult and conflict sinking,

2. And my burden with sharpened edges binding,
For its bearer, and victory's existence ensuring,

3. And my swaying, for the horses running,
With its glory, a breast softening and piercing,

4. And my steps under a vanished lion's banner,
With his might, time's vicissitudes conquering,

5. And my gallop, the smooth-coated gray, gliding,
Light of gait the day of peace, gliding,

6. Severe in might, of obeyed command,
Striking each enemy or lancer,

7. Dearer to me than a singing companion,
And a brimming cup from an admirer's hand,

8. And my revelry with cups to a recluse,
Their exterior absent, their core present,

9. And kissing double-lidded slumberous eyes,
With absolute beauty, to the heart present,

10. And my contemplation of life or death,
To gratify each enchantress and tempter,

11. And so I face those who exult in my love,
As they exulted in Bakr among the Hawazin,

12. And glory lies only in towering places,
At the summit of greatness, its positions,

13. With resolve in adversities, not wavering,
And valor in events, not weakening,

14. And company of a glorified star guiding,
Facilitating dawn with forbearance, guiding,

15. And every hot-tempered angry lion,
Like a sword, in him death residing,

16. Generous, not heeding the speech of a slanderer,
Tomorrow in his action and words, slayer,

17. Pious, from the garment of dishonor, disdaining,
With his ambition, time's repute, disdaining,

18. And company of a constant scholar,
In good conduct with knowledge, constant,

19. A brother, for the malady ofEnmity, healing,
And water of love from him, not tainted,

20. And if you save yourself in battle,
And make chastity through it a refuge,

21. Then you have no equal in fortune,
And no match in supremacy and dominion.
