1. The rains envied your generous palm,
So they turned against you and began to harm.

2. The rain barred us from visiting a raincloud,
Though lightning and soft drizzle promised its advent.

3. Our bodies grew frail, so we visited with hearts,
For the noble man is visited through hearts.

4. The clouds veiled it from us for a time,
As clouds can veil even the moon.

5. It seemed the clouds softened with complaint,
And abundant tears streamed from them.

6. Or they feigned to emulate your generosity,
Though they cannot aspire to equal you.

7. That one with water that flows plentifully, while you
With wealth, your gifts enslave the free.

8. You, your hand waters all the destitute,
While the destitute's hand waters the desert sands.

9. From it, day darkens like the night,
While from your face, darkness is day.

10. O Granter, who has no granter but Him,
And no chooser but Him for the hopeful.

11. I shortened my repetition only for propriety,
Lest prolonged description breed familiarity.

12. The clouds saw that when they gather,
Eyes no longer gaze toward them.

13. While to you, eyes aspire, whether you appear
Or disappear behind the highlands.

14. So we bent the rain away, truly we bent it away,
And remained while the rays returned.
