1. Between your phantom and my eyelids are trysts
So it fades when I'm told that I'm asleep
١. ما بَينَ طَيفِكَ وَالجُفونِ مَواعِدُ
فَيَفي إِذا خُبِّرتَ أَنّي راقِدُ
2. I yearn for slumber so I can share it
With the stray gazelle it hunts as bait
٢. إِنّي لَأَطمَعُ في الرُقادِ لِأَنَّهُ
شَرَكٌ يُصادُ بِهِ الغَزالُ الشارِدُ
3. So I stay content with the mirage though
It's a yearning born of corrupt mirage
٣. فَأَظَلُّ أَقنَعُ بِالخَيالِ وَإِنَّهُ
طَمَعٌ يُوَلِّدُهُ الخَيالُ الفاسِدُ
4. Alas, the loved one's sorrow won't be cured
By the phantom's closeness when the loved one's far
٤. هَيهاتَ لا يَشفي المُحِبَّ مِنَ الأَسى
قُربُ الخَيالِ وَرَبُّهُ مُتَباعِدُ
5. And many have faulted my delight in love
Lacking the pleasures that I do find
٥. وَلَقَد تَعَرَّضَ لِلمَحَبَّةِ مَعشَرٌ
عَدِموا مِنَ اللَذّاتِ ما أَنا واجِدُ
6. They say I've loved each coquette
I told them the motivator is one
٦. عابوا اِبتِهاجي بِالغَرامِ وَأَنَّني
ما عِشتُ مِن سُكرِ المَحَبَّةِ مائِدُ
7. So wherever beauty I found in a place
It led me with the rashness of youth
٧. قالوا تَعَشَّقَ كُلَّ رَبِّ مَلاحَةٍ
فَأَجَبتُهم إِنَّ المُحَرِّكَ واحِدُ
8. I knew not that the gazelle's glances
Are for the lions, snares and traps
٨. فَالحُسنُ حيثُ وَجَدتُهُ في حَيِّزٍ
هُوَ لي بِأَرسانِ الصَبابَةِ قائِدُ
9. Indeed, He who created the wilderness made it
With tools that prove His perfection
٩. ما كُنتُ أَعلَمُ أَنَّ أَلحاظَ الظِبا
هِيَ لِلأُسودِ حَبائِلٌ وَمَصايَدُ
10. So seven stars wheel the skies
While one star steers the two earths
١٠. إِنَّ الَّذي خَلَقَ البَريَّةَ ناطَها
بِوَسائِطٍ هِيَ لِلكَمالِ شَواهِدُ
11. A star that has in kingship resolute stars
They are meteors when a demon stirs
١١. فَتُدَبِّرُ الأَفلاكَ سَبعَةُ أَجنُمٍ
وَيُدَبِّرُ الأَرضَينَ نَجمٌ واحِدُ
12. The victorious king, his kindness near
His glory far, exalted his frontier
١٢. نَجمٌ لَهُ في المُلكِ أَنجُمُ عَزمَةٍ
هُنَّ الرُجومُ إِذا تَطَرَّقَ مارِدُ
13. A king whose gifts and noble deeds
Are traps and schemes against the foe
١٣. المالِكُ المَنصورُ مَلكٌ جودُهُ
داني المَنالِ وَمَجدُهُ مُتَباعِدُ
14. Like rain holding tremors for tyrants
And cool flowing water for those who hope
١٤. مَلِكٌ لَدَيهِ مَواهِبٌ وَمَكارِمٌ
هِيَ لِلعُداةِ مَواهِنٌ وَمَكايِدُ
15. His might is feared, his gifts hoped for
Like the sea holding havocs and benefits
١٥. كَالغَيثِ فيهِ لِلطُغاةِ زَلازِلٌ
وَلِمَن يُؤَمِّلُهُ الزُلالُ البارِدُ
16. His opinions for creatures are guides
His concerns for thesinging girls are proofs
١٦. يُخشى وَتُرجى بَطشُهُ وَهِباتُه
كَالبَحرِ فيهِ مَهالِكٌ وَفَوائِدُ
17. Don't be disheartened by his might from his kindness
Behind clouds are lightning bolts and thunder roars
١٧. آراؤُهُ لِلكائِناتِ طَلائِعٌ
وَهُمومُهُ بِالغانِياتِ شَواهِدُ
18. He bestows horses, camels and caravans
And carriers, ships and loaded convoys
١٨. لا يُؤيِسَنَّكَ بَأسُهُ مِن جودِهِ
دونَ السَحابِ بَوارِقٌ وَرَواعِدُ
19. For you, O son of Urtha, the generous deed is a trait
So your kindness exceeds your grandfather's name
١٩. يَهَبُ المَطِيَّ وَرَكبُهُنَّ وَصائِفٌ
وَالصافِناتِ وَحِملُهُنَّ وَلائِدُ
20. You inherited the glory of Sura's line though it faded
And you built it so now it thrives anew
٢٠. لَكَ يا اِبنَ أُرتُقَ بِالمَكارِمِ نِسبَةٌ
فَلِذاكَ جودُكَ كَاِسمِ جَدِّكَ زائِدُ
21. A people whose palms were accustomed to gifts
For the generous are accustomed to kindness
٢١. أورِثتَ مَجدَ سَراةِ أُرتُقَ إِذ خَلَت
وَبَنيتَهُ فَهُوَ الطَريفُ التالِدُ
22. They lived and their excellence was spring for the land
So for them is living praise and lasting remembrance
٢٢. قَومٌ تَعَوَّدَتِ الهِباتِ أَكُفُّهُم
إِنَّ المَكارِمَ لِلكِرامِ عَوائِدُ
23. Their palms on days of peace are streams
Their hearts on days of strife solid rocks
٢٣. عاشوا وَفَضلُهُمُ رَبيعٌ لِلوَرى
فَلَهُم ثَناً يَحيا وَذِكرٌ خالِدُ
24. You've guaranteed whom the times tasked with protection
As if for all humanity you are creation's own father
٢٤. فَأَكُفُّهُم يَومَ السَماحِ جَداوِلٌ
وَقُلوبُهُم يَومَ الكِفاحِ جَلامِدُ
25. So your hands are like necklaces on time's neck
Your help like jewels on the forehead of mankind
٢٥. وَكَفَلتَ مَن كَلِفَ الزَمانُ بِحِفظِهِ
حَتّى كَأَنَّكَ لِلبَرِيَّةِ والِدُ
26. You honored me and raised my worth
So my critics' envy of your proximity consumed them
٢٦. فَيَداكَ في عُنقِ الزَمانِ غَلائِلٌ
وَنَداكَ في جيدِ الأَنامِ قَلائِدُ
27. You knew my love for you led me to you
So your affection for me and care will return
٢٧. وَعُنيتَ بي وَرَفَعتَ قَدري في الوَرى
فَعَواذِلي في القُربِ مِنكَ حَواسِدُ
28. Forgive a lover if his person is absent
Coming to you are his poems and his aims
٢٨. وَعَلِمتَ أَنّي في مَحَبَّتِكَ الَّذي
فَنَداكَ لي صِلَةٌ وَبِرُّكَ عائِدُ
29. When praise of you leads me away
Yearning for you pulls the reins toward you
٢٩. فَاِعذِر مُحِبّاً إِن تَباعَدَ شَخصُهُ
جاءَتكَ مِنهُ قَصائِدٌ وَمَقاصِدُ
30. I made all my words for you licit
Those that I consider & those I stipulate
٣٠. فَإِذا ثَنائي عَنكَ هَمٌّ سائِقٌ
جَذَبَ العِنانَ إِلَيكَ شَوقٌ قائِدُ
31. If I compose poetry then for you I sing praise
If I write prose then for you I give thanks
٣١. وَلَقَد وَقَفتُ عَلَيكَ لَفظي كُلَّهُ
مِمّا أَحِلُّ بِهِ وَما أَنا عاقِدُ
٣٢. فَإِذا نَظَمتُ فَإِنَّني لَكَ مادِحٌ
وَإِذا نَشَرتُ فَإِنَّني لَكَ حامِدُ
