1. Many a day I've whiled away,
Clad in frivolous clothes of play and jest,
١. رُبَّ يَومٍ قَد رَفَلتُ بِهِ
في ثِيابِ اللَهوِ وَالمَرَحِ
2. While morning's torch awoke the day,
But slumber still my brow oppressed.
٢. أَشرَقَت شَمسُ المُدامِ بِهِ
وَجَبينُ الصُبحِ لَم يَلُحِ
3. We lingered in the woods' embrace,
Beneath the spreading trees we stayed,
٣. فَظَلَلنا بَينَ مُغتَبِقٍ
بِحُمَيّاها وَمُصطَبِحِ
4. While songbirds trilled with charm and grace,
In rhythmic verse and refined cadence.
٤. وَشَدَت في الدَوحِ صادِحَةٌ
بِضُروبِ السَجعِ وَالمُلَحِ
5. Whenever one released its woeful moan,
Another took up the glad refrain,
٥. كُلَّما ناحَت عَلى شَجَنٍ
خِلتُها غَنَّت عَلى قَدَحِ
