1. He who is closest suffers the farthest when parted
When he passes by, missing his beloved parts them

2. Missing the life of being with loved ones parts him
From what he had feared losing before death parts him

3. Firm he was before the separation but
The intense pangs of parting shook his firmness

4. Gladdened by their union, fate’s events
Then scattered what had been his wholeness

5. Love disobeyed not when they urged him
Nor obeyed the spies’ prodding toward madness

6. Their mention pained yet remembering them revived him
While their blame killed and their censure animated him

7. They feigned courtesy and melancholy toward me
To me it seems mocking and gloating over him

8. The intensity of sorrows silenced his heart’s bonds
And the sight of enemies echoed his mirror’s image

9. How can sorrows exceed the limit of my patience
After calamities made his youth scatter

10. I was seeking aid from my patience’s swords
But after we parted, doubt sprouted its seeds

11. A virtuous man who joined eloquence and knowledge
And his diverse views embraced each other

12. The exalted granted him a heart’s ambition
That purified his essence from the flaws of blame

13. Some poetry does not follow what’s been told
But with merit, it guides its straying

14. With meanings that shine in the mold of words
Clearing the lamp of its darkness

15. And if editors refine a poem’s composition
The composition has refined its transmitters

16. Firm in the battles of diction and merit
We praise his inclining and his connection

17. We have probed its limits in verse and prose
And found its composition intricately interwoven

18. O Jamal al-Din, who attained precedence
While steeds stumble not over his lead

19. You are the hearts’ strength—had you given
To a love from your company, nothing would be lost to him

20. A messenger came from you, I wondered at him
When he glanced my way and turned to me

21. Bringing to friends generous gifts
While I have no intimacy between them and me

22. I looked at the lines in his hand
Reminding me of times with their sender

23. Had you sent through them a greeting to your servant
It would have, after death, restored his life

24. So favor me with intimacy, and send to your servant
Some fragments of your generous musk

25. You have abundant knowledge, be generous
And make responding to answers its alms
