1. Your glances have deprived us,
When every maiden outstripped us in love.

2. So we remained ignorant of passion, not knowing that
The lion becomes the prey of the gazelles at daybreak,

3. With languorous eyelids over those weakened by drink
In their weakness, and the morning's deadly onslaught,

4. And eyes in whose glances is a stillness
Swifter in destruction than all movements.

5. Say to that beauty, since I aimed at success, my implements have become part of my implements.
O twin of the pipe, soft and flexible,

6. My night is as long as the shadow of the pipe
After it had been short, through my union with you in the wasteland, resembling the claws of a cat.

7. My home is between the Tigris and the Euphrates, not between the Tigris and Syria,
And my roses are from the Spring of the Tigris and the Euphrates, not from the River Bi'r and al-Furat.

8. Among a people I am not to blame if I vent
My soul's anguish against them.

9. And my sipping the wine of your love, while my heart
Is safe from the vicissitudes of events.

10. I have no fear, with my sipping you, of death,
For I have attained the fountain of life

11. From a mouth I had not sipped before
Its sides gathered in pearls in the folds.

12. I see none but you more deserving of my devotion
Unless I refrain the best of all judges.

13. The noble youth, the refined sun of the faith,
Lord of magnificent, dazzling merits.

14. A ruler whose view, when the matter grows complex,
Is a lamp in the darkness of complex issues.

15. Of knowledge which, when the wave of doubt rises high,
Becomes for the adversary ships of salvation.

16. Had the darkness borrowed his refined morals,
It would have dispensed with lamps.

17. He combines with his excellent gift, bounty,
And beauty of character with beauties.

18. Whenever his outstanding virtues gathered,
His wealth scatters apart.

19. He has a meadow which, when the Pleiades rain,
Displays delicate, flowery gardens.

20. With meanings that illuminate the darkness of the ink,
Resembling shining stars.

21. The sweetness of his utterance told us
That the fountain of life is in the darkness.

22. O you who are sent, in whom men believed
In the clear tokens of his overflowing favor.

23. How many fasts you combined with vigils,
And prayers followed by prayers.

24. And how much listening in which the Just King
Shared in its lasting, righteous works.

25. So you frequented the Sacred House and aimed
With arrows of rejection the hearts of enemies.

26. And how much delightful sin you denied yourself
On the day you declared yourself forbidden the eyes of the wicked.

27. Then you performed the lâbik devotedly when you uttered lâbik,
Responding to whoever called you to bounties.

28. And you went forth to circumambulate, extinguishing
The heat of worries with your steps.

29. And you touched the ancient corner,
So the hearts of enemies were resigned to distress.

30. And you traversed the Abrahamic course,
And how much you were rewarded in bounties the efforts of yearners.

31. And how long you shortened the time you shortened
Fearful souls by fear.

32. And the soul's wish, at the descent in Minâ,
You attained, despite enemies and fault-finders.

33. And you pelted the pillars with pebbles into the midst of enemies
When you pelted with pebbles.

34. And how much favor you bestowed when you descended
From ‘Arafât's abundance.

35. And you saw praise more lasting than wealth,
So you left it neglected among gifts.

36. Good women are for good men by origin,
And good men are for good women.

37. Do not call us to fulfill your right with shame,
O perfect in clarity and qualities.

38. If we strung the stars as necklaces for you,
We would not fulfill your obligatory rights.
