1. Quench my bones with freshly pressed wine,
In its clarified, filtered juice,

2. And dispel sorrow with cheerful song
In its limpid, sparkling produce.

In your pure, pristine, pellucid cruse,

4. And protect the cup from the water’s pollution
By the Lord of daybreak and of light’s infusion.

5. Give me coffee to lift the gloom of dusk
And keep pouring till I see the elephant’s bulk

6. Amber in glass that makes it glow,
Like a firefly in glowing mercury’s flow.

7. It shines in the palm of a cheerful lad
With skin so fair and clothes richly clad.

8. His face’s light in its frame of curls
Is like the sun robed in sunset’s swirls.

9. His glance and his cup leave us drunk
Now from a goblet, now from his eyes that have sunk

10. Their gaze in ours. Do you not see the new cloud
Glowering at the horizon, surly and proud?

11. Drink then to its freshness
From our wine aged to mellowness

12. In my orchard decked out and verdant
With basil and lote trees pleasant.

13. This is my heart’s desire, not the plain
Of Sadir nor Khoran’s dusty terrain.

14. Look how the cups glitter through the leaves
Like pearls hung on emerald that gleams and weaves.

15. The flowers have spread for us a carpet
Of red, yellow, green and shades blue that meet.

16. The stream flows free and bound
And birds nesting and flying abound,

17. Bulbuls, sparrows and turtledoves croon.
Split the dawn with daybreak’s first tune

18. Before the sun’s rays light up the sky
To reveal the dark night’s dismal guise.

19. Fear no poverty or destitute day,
For generous souls will always make way

20. To bestow their bounty upon me
And grace my life most plentifully.

21. Their gifts have oft restored my weary soul
And their favors have always made me whole.

22. So I praise their names from east to west
Though I could not wholly their merits attest,

23. For their generosity overflowing
Is beyond all limits of knowing.
