The days conveyed to me the worst of messages.

And do not lean towards emptiness.

5. Sing to me the name of Layla, perhaps one day
When I attain her, that day will be the apple of my eye.

6. The watchful critic left and the drinker freely
Drank from cups and flasks.

7. The tender-eyed gazelle with smooth cheek
Has always dyed us with his blood.

8. He wreaked havoc among us, killing freely until
The stars raced across the skies.

9. Passion raged in the wine and boiled
With bubbles depicting ruins and wastelands.

10. She was angered and whispering devils
Began to whisper in her restless mind.

11. She changed the hue of the goblets with a light
That is the best dye for the cup.

12. It grew dark, would that the face of Abu al-Fatah
Were lit up by its illuminating radiance!

13. A rain of generosity, if it intends for purpose, flows
And a flood, if it intends injustice, gushes.

14. Generous with his bounty after it pours
Quenching the thirst of horses and racing camels.

15. Forgiving of sins after overpowering,
Returning to prayer after rest.

16. Wealth refuses to spend it, yet his swords’
Generosity spares no seeker.

17. He planted generosity into the earth and multiplied it
By abundant planting in the valleys.

18. The giver of open palms has flooded the two worlds
With granting gifts and pouring forth.

19. He attacked war, guided by a sword
That knows the necks and skulls.

20. He plunged into the murky depths of parting until
His reason disputed with the mind.

21. He cast meteors like plummeting eagles
With glowing polished blades.

22. A raid that did not fear the scolding of a people
Who do not fear the roaring of lions.

23. I was envied for it by all creation when
It lasted while time listened to me and obeyed.

24. The wrongs of fate cleansed me before it
So I rose above people, spreading my reputation.

25. But my lofty resolves protected me
From its fickle changes.

26. The gaze of enemies fell away from you Abu al-Fatah
And their hearts passed the night in anguish.

27. The hypocrites’ rage at you, and every
Harmful one now fears you while carving.

28. The water of life vanished from it, so it perished,
Fearing your biting blade.

29. It saddened your enemies but you did not cease to rule,
Safe from the thorns of doubt.
