1. When a wise man is distressed by being close to the shedding of blood
He drinks deep drafts from the cups of misfortunes
١. إِذا بُلي اللَبيبُ بِقُربِ فَدمٍ
تَجَرَّعَ مِنهُ كاساتِ الحُتوفِ
2. So one of rugged temperament unintentionally harms
One whose temperament is gentle
٢. فَذو الطَبعِ الكَثيفِ بِغَيرِ قَصدٍ
يُضِرُّ بِصاحِبِ الطَبعِ اللَطيفِ
3. And that is because between them there is a contradiction
That opposes reason with violent ignorance
٣. وَذاكَ لِأَنَّ بَينَهُما اِختِلافاً
يُنافي العَقلَ بِالجَهلِ العَنيفِ
4. For the disease of ignorance has no cure
Like a raging fever in the autumn season
٤. فَداءُ الجَهلِ لَيسَ لَهُ دَواءٌ
كَحُمّى الرَبعِ في فَصلِ الخَريفِ
