1. The scorpions crept upon his cheeks
And the curled hair crept upon his back

2. His smile appeared, so his glance excelled
A sapling warding off thorns from its rose

3. An idol whom the lovers went astray from
Since its repulsive appearance became evident

4. Between life’s coming and its reaching
There’s a difference like that between a dove and its cooing

5. A Turk gazelle that does not refrain
From beauty for a creature that came after him

6. Cheerless, loveless, as though
The radiance of his face flowed from his affection

7. Bearing weapons upon a delicate body
Silk would burden it because of its fineness

8. So you see his swordbelt around his neck
More splendid and elegant than the jewels of his necklace

9. Of the house of the Khans whose small ones
In the saddle are as if in the cradle

10. They made riding horses the limit of their maturity
For the skillful, it is their reaching full strength

11. So when their small one comes bloodied
With the blood of cavaliers, he is said to have reached his prime

12. Whether mounted or armored while marching
Or every straight-bladed sword like his stature

13. Or every balanced spear shaft like his body
And blood-spattered with the blood of warriors, as though

14. The openings of his coat of mail were dyed with his cheek
Facing the darkness of battle with his face

15. As if he cloaked darkness with its opposite
And meeting the breasts of swords while his face

16. Shows the same polish as the sheen of his blade
He meets spears with his chest and breast

17. And blades with his breast and chest
And when death bared her leg

18. He rushed forth bareheaded toward the fray
A peer whom his peer fears from his nearness

19. Multiples more than his lover fears from his distance
He appears, so the enemy repels him in gloom

20. While the lover repels him in ecstasy
He strikes down warriors with his spears and sword

21. One sheathed, the other bared
Until, when he met an opponent in single combat

22. The beauty of his grace preoccupied him from responding
I have always strived in cultivating his character

23. And reproached in this blame and passion
Until after hardship, it was made easy for me

24. And the smile of his expression relaxed from his promise
And he came covering his missteps with his bough

25. Shielding its clusters in his curls
And he began offering from intoxication the likes of

26. What was in his cup of pleasure and nectar
I gambled with him at backgammon then between us

27. Was a wager our souls had agreed to
Until I saw the inscriptions of my luck appear

28. And my hands were freed, wearing its shackles
So I collected my pieces masterfully there

29. With the least that the dice cup manifested
Then I inclined toward happiness and luxuriated

30. And reposed in the shade of bliss and its expanse
I hastened enduring glory and did not sell

31. The cash of joy and delight for its loss
Until, when glory diminished its shade

32. And the den of my social circle was devoid of its lion
With concealment, I quenched the breaths of separation

33. And lined my eyes in the darkness with its ashes
With a reddish dark steed with four white fetlocks

34. Whose whiteness flourishes over its blackness
The dawn dressed it in a robe of first light

35. While darkness clothed it in its skin
So it was as if, when it was clad in darkness

36. And dawn broke, its outstanding cloak turned white
Restless, so if its pace fluctuates

37. The pursuer thinks it is in its cradle
I cast pebbles from its hooves thereby

38. And startle the dawnlight with its opposite
And I wander in the expanse of the lands as if I were

39. The sword of Ibn Urtuqa that does not settle in its sheath
The righteous king whom the ranks of the exalted

40. Prospered through, and the star of his fortune shone
The victorious king who attained glory through his effort

41. And the kingdom an inheritance from his father and grandfather
Easygoing in reaching the station of his rule

42. And formidable atop the platform of his saddle
So when he appeared, he filled the eyes with awe

43. And when he was munificent, he filled the palms with his gifts
Like rain that grants people generosity after

44. Dazzling minds with its lightning and thunder
So time swears that it is of its compassion

45. And death vows that it is of its troops
And beasts proclaim that it is of their kind

46. And birds call that it is of their delegation
Intoxicated with the wine of munificence while sober

47. It does not distract his reason from maturity
O son of one who guaranteed people as if

48. Adam entrusted him at the demise of his children
The sovereign, the victorious, the king who

49. Attained glory through his grandfather and ancestors
A root through which the glories of your honor thrived

50. And a branch whose goodness appears from its flowers
You gave abundantly for little praise

51. And you came spending in creation from your treasury
And he who preoccupied the enemy with himself

52. From me as he preoccupied the friend with his praise
And sheltered me when enmity coveted my blood

53. And saw the healing of their breasts in shedding it
Every tasted pleasure smiled from his mouth

54. And a burning coal kindled in the heart from his hatred
And that is why he did not see me as a poet

55. Whose poems seek the rewards of his purpose
But as one who bestowed generosity upon him

56. So praise became the extent of his effort
And knew that the prose of my poetry is a jewel

57. And other than it, prose unfit for his necklace
And indeed I have forbidden the brides of my thoughts

58. To be wed to a benefactor after him
But you are the branch whose root he is

59. In nobility, and your glory a portion of his glory
His confidante in his secret, his successor

60. In his matter, his chosen one after him
And to you the kingdom aspired after him

61. Seeking a response, had you been forgiving to answer it
Yet you left it voluntarily while enabled

62. To unclasp its wrist from its bracelet
And you bolstered your brother's resolve, O Aaron

63. When he feared severity from you in your support
Until the sons of all the kingdoms altogether

64. Knew you had fulfilled his pledge
Fate was generous to you while miserly

65. And sometimes the miser is deliberate in his purpose
And time promised we would see in you what we long for

66. And now time has fulfilled its promise
By God, how many favors you have burdened me with

67. While a raindrop is greatest to be encompassed in its number
And you knew what was in my conscience for you of devotion

68. As if you were present in its affection
If my distance from your eminence is a sin

69. The Master may forgive the sin of His servant
The distance of the loyal is like his nearness

70. Since his affection remains as the nearness of the resentful is his distance
My praise of your glory is out of pure devotion

71. While my equal harbors spite in its sweetness
For I do not intend with it repayment, since it

72. Is an ocean I chasteen my rendered goods from reaching
Not like one who made poetry merchandise

73. Anticipating profiting from its toil
So seek a pearl, you who are the essence of its sea

74. And wear praise, you who are the weaver of its cloak
It increases in beauty whenever you repeat it

75. Like musk whose beauty appears in its coinage
