1. How many a friend, when his anger first showed,
I’ve welcomed with a nature he wished for;
١. فَكَم صاحِبٍ مُذ بَدا سُخطُه
بَذَلتُ لَهُ خُلُقاً مُرتَضى
2. Fearing our bond of affection would break
Or our pledge of devotion would bid them adieu.
٢. مَخافَةَ أَن تَنقَضي بَينَنا
عُهودُ المَوَدَّةِ أَو يَنقُضا
3. Though his deeds may have saddened and caused me pain,
And from loyalty he turned and withdrew,
٣. وَإِنّي وَإِن ساءَني فِعلُهُ
وَأَصبَحَ بَعدَ الوَفا مُعرِضا
4. I’d meet him with a visage of grace,
And behold him with eyes of pleasure anew.
٤. أُقابِلُهُ بِمُحَيّا القَبولِ
وَأَلحَظُهُ بِعُيونِ الرِضا
